We fished the reel last night and were very impressed. It's fast, and the feel is Beast, only faster. Pulling double 8s, there was a noticeable difference between the Beast high speed the the Rocket. It just plain pulls easier and of course faster.
Abu assures in the 2017 catalog it's designed to pull large muskie baits. We'll be tossing double 10s with the reel an entire evening soon on a 9' rod; I threw one for a half hour on a Beast 8' rod, and was pleasantly surprised. It's a winner if you want speed and power in a compact, easy to palm design.

| It pulls baits easier than the Beast HS? I was planning on getting a Beast HS for medium sized cranks and double 8's and smaller blades. Maybe I should wait for this to come out!?? |

Physical specs match the Beast HS (ABU website for beast specs vs what Steve posted for rocket) with the obvious exception of gear ratio/IPT. He said the handles were slightly different also. Otherwise the bearing count, Max drag, physical weight, line capacity and frame all seem to be the same as the Beast, which makes sense from a business POV for ABU. |

Yup. Steve actually said the handle knobs were different in one of his more recent posts, which seems like it would make little difference in actual ease of use. It appeared they were essentially the same reel as the Beast but with higher gearing, which is why being faster yet easier isn't making sense to me. That's why I was wondering if there was some other difference we didn't know about.
Probably the true test of "ease" will be fishing one for a day with double 9's or 10's. Most double 8's come in pretty easy regardless of gear ratio. I'm speculating it won't be the reel of choice for most for heavy double 10 use but time will tell. I'm sure it will be a sweet reel for guys that want an ultra fast reel for other purposes though - small bucktails, jerkbaits, rubber, etc. Not really something I have a need for (the HS Beast should be plenty fast for me), but interesting. I wonder if the gears would swap into the Beast or S. One would think they might.

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I found reeling fairly slowly blew the bucktail right out of the water last so reeling any faster wasn't an option unless I wanted the bait skipping across the water. I was very impressed with the reel, and can say with absolute certainty it controlled the big (8/10 blades) spinnerbaits I threw for awhile in the slop better than the Beast HS, and we tried them both back to back. Kept the bait on top better, got it going faster, and could blow the lure out. Fishing heavy cover where keeping the lure on track is critical was easy, the reel palms well, and is a silky caster.
It'll be a great reel for rubber, too, line pick up is very fast.
Perhaps it felt really good to me because reeling slower got the bait cooking very well, and in fact caused me to have to slow down several times to keep the bait in the water. The reel didn't bind, or get 'hard to reel'.
As far as I know, there's two of these reels out there right now. We'll see what Jiggy has to say soon.
The handles feel quite different, especially the grips. Keith commented that the handle was very comfortable, and I agree.
Only 4 hours on her so far, but we'll get more, including a complete video showing how the reel performs very soon. |

You do realize that the gears for a LH are not cut the same way as a RH eel? Therefore they are not interchangeable.
If LH gears are available, then the Beast Rocket will be as well. Its not like Rocket 7.5 gears are currently made for the LH Revo Toro Beast now. |

Just out of curiosity why is this reel cheaper then the beast. Is it more of a bass reel. On the demo video they are throwing what looks to be like bass baits. You think a high speed reel such as the Rocket would draw a higher price tag. Are the parts in the Rocket not as good as the beast? I'm not complaining, just curious. |
