| Just purchased some down east rod holders and some new rods and reels for trolling. Was wondering if anyone attaches a safety line to the rod and reel in case the worst happens... If so, how and what did you use to secure your rod and reel.

| I do not think one is necessary unless you start using heavy in-line weights to get lures down. When trolling with big in line weights, mostly for walleyes or trout/salmon then I use a tether. Rig one up with a clip to the reel and to the down easter, usually coated cable works well. The weights if gone over board are enough to pull the whole rig out of the boat otherwise not an issue.

Location: pittsburgh, pa | Some people do use a leash system. depends on the angle of the rod there is def a chance they will pop out. Unscrew the reel seat and have a piece of cable crimped together in a circle and put reel back on. then have a leash tied off to somewhere in the boat that you can clip onto the cable. when pulling plows, frankys, and other hard pulling big baits they can rattle out depending on angle.

Where I fish, and how I fish I EXPLODE down Easters all the time in the late, late fall. I keep lots of spares in the boat. If your running big pulling baits, with rods buried in the water, its only a matter of time in the cold when a tank hits... good night, rod over board. I would leash every rod or your going to loose a set up. Loops around base of reel with leash to loop, cheap and very effective. I wouldn't run anything other the a salty, bar none best rod holders for trolling ever made.

| Yes we did get the salty's for the set up and we do intend on using the rods for salmon on planers from time to time, seeing as how we live so close to lake ontario. I very much appreciate the suggestions and insight.
