The yellow handled one...

It's nice and small, fits in your back pocket, easy to find due to the bright yellow handle...

I'll usually start all my hooks with two halves of a chainsaw file, so it's not like I'm sharpening dull off the shelf hooks with it. But I go through one every season. By the end of the year, it just doesn't seem to have any bite left.

Anybody else notice this, or have I been buying a cheap knock off? Anybody know of a similar file that holds up more than a season?

I guess it's not a big deal to replace something that costs $8 or whatever, but I never remember that I need a new one until I'm on the water filing and filing and filing trying to restore the points from setting the hook on a rock.

And don't tell me you never set the hook on a rock!

The luhr jenson's now cost $16. I heard they revamped the hook file and adjusted the price accordingly a while ago. You can still find the south bend hook file for $6 or something.

Yup. MSRP is $16.99 on the 4-inch file and more on the 5-inch. I picked up five of the red-handled ones at a Meijer store in all 2011 for $3 each and I think they do fine compared to the Luhr.

Get a file card and clean it out. Probably just clogged up.

At least it means you keep your hooks plenty sharp! I have been keeping mine in my pocket or covered up in some way to stop it from getting any kind of rust build-up. I am just hoping that it gives them a longer life span.

For the chainsaw style I've found the Smity file (two sizes available) to be excellent. After a few seasons it wasn't cutting quite as well. Cleaned it up with a wire brush and I was back in business just like new. I also carry a couple of the Luhr-Jensens and use them for touch up.

Not a fan of the Red handled ones...Thorne Brothers had those a few years back when they could not get the Luhr Jensen...they were gararge (IMHO). I liek the LJ but also have a Smitty file that is not the rail file but a larger version of the LJ with a wood handle. Works great for 7/0-10/0 hooks. Its a little cumbersome for smaller than 7/0...

The tyrant file with the black handle works well.
