For you Tuffy 1760 owners out there, is the 1760 tiller with a 75hp Optimax (w/powersteering) capable of handling Green Bay comfortably? Top end speed is less important to me. I'm primarily concerned with hole shot so I can get up on plane quickly in bad weather.

I am considering upgrading from a 17' aluminum tiller for next year with the intention of fishing Green Bay more often. I would rather not go up to the console boat both because I prefer the simplicity of tiller boats and budget restraints.

Thanks.

I fished had a 1700 tiller for quite a few years and would have no issue taking it on GB. With any boat, you need to watch the weather and be aware ofyour skills driving. BR

I have a 1760GT with a Yammie F75. Never been to green bay but have had it on Mille Lacs many occasions. Does just fine on windy days. I think you will be even better off with the 2-stroke for better planing and bow control. You will be glad it has hydraulic steering. I have the titan for mine and hated it without. Was just fine on lighter wind days but anytime you are running distances in a significant chop the hydraulics are a shoulder saver.

I've got a 1760GT with an optimax. I have never been to green bay either but I would think that wavelength would be pretty long on the big bay. I have fished LOTW for several years. The first few were out of an esox magnum. I filled that boat up once in 3 footers and there was many days that I had to rent a camp deep v or sit and watch the waves so I upgraded to the 1760. This hull is fantastic; sits low at rest so you are nice and close to the water for figure 8's and really rides high when on plane. I ran the boat for two years with the old style tiller and it was fine until the water got a little rough and then you had to trim the nose down to cut the waves. That is when the torque got pretty hard on long runs. Just a couple weeks ago I installed the new titan big tiller from merten/mercury. I had to raise the engine two holes to get it to work. The way the splash well is designed and the opti tillers you can not trim the motor up very high at all. It was mounted all the way down and the move up was a good one anyway. Gained a little speed and hole shot by raising it. If you get one have them mount it in the middle hole to start with. I'm running a 16P vengeance prop. Light load by myself getting about 35 1/2mph, loaded with gear and three goes down to about 33. Hole shot is good, ranges from 4-5 seconds depending on load. It will plane around 18-20mph and likes to go about 28 in a big chop, slices the waves like a dream. The titan tiller is more than adequate for a 75 you wouldn't need to go with power steering.

i have been running a 1760 tiller since 2008 (480 hours on the yamaha tach)in MANY different bodies of water in MANY different water conditions and i can tell you it is just what tuffy says it is, the 17 footer that thinks it's a 20.last year on eagle i ran some huge waves that blew up in a storm that scared the !#@& out of me[us].just ask ryan or allan about that thrill ride!it is the smoothest riding 17' boat i've ever been in.it sits low and flat when fishing and with the right prop gets up high on plane.i use it to fish walleye on the miississippi, walleye, pike, bass and crappie in rainy and muskie where ever i can.everybody who fishes with me comments on how nice the boat rides and fishes.it also works pretty good for playing on the water too:)

Thanks, guys. This is good info.

Rudy & Farmer Rick -- Are you guys running 75hp motors? Is there any value in stepping up to a 90hp or is that wasted dollars?

Also, does anyone know if the 1760t se deal for $25,900 is still out there or was that special boat show pricing?

I am running the 75 opti. Same block as the 90/115 so you wouldn't gain that much by going up. Plus the tiller is only rated for 75. You could run into trouble by putting a motor on that is larger than boat is rated for, especially with insurance and the law keepers. You would have to talk to a dealer about pricing. Get a hold of Steve Worrall and he can hook you up with the closest dealer to you.
