Posts: 4 | Hey guys. Im pretty new here, just finally decided to post something. I was fishing the hudson river in New York the other day for stripers, and while having my rods out with herring I was casting some of my musky lures of a rock point with my TI rod and one of my Abu Garcia 6600 c4s. Mostly trying out some new lures I had purchased here but sorta hoping to hook into one of the huge pike I've caught there before. I actually ended up hooking into a decent striper on a 6 inch jake and I was honestly for the first time ever a little unhappy with my drag. The fish kept running at the boat and I was getting that jerky drag release I was used to on my older abus that my dad had. My reels are always cleaned, only about 2 years old, and the drag washers are in great shape. What I'd like to do is upgrade the washers. I've heard the name carbontex thrown around but I don't know where to go about getting them. Any help would be great. Also I'm open to anything but I'd prefer to buy the washers and install them myself. Thanks

Posts: 4 | Thanks I actually just stumbled onto the smoothdrags site a few minutes ago. I'll be sending them an email. What is the advantage of the drag grease? Makes it a little smoother?

Posts: 218 | From what I understand takes the jerk out of them., all my abu's have carbon drag washers and I think I'm gonna give the cals grease. A try. They sell it also

Posts: 208 Location: Northern Wisc. | if you used braided line with no backer it might be the line that is slipping on the reel and not your drag....i have seen that happen a lot. you either need mono backing or electrical tape/duct tape directly to the spool and put line on top of the tape. Not sure if that applies.

Posts: 4 | I use masterbraid but all my reels are backed with mono and taped so no slippage there. I think what im gonna do is try the drag grease on the abu drag washers and see how that goes. If that doesnt work out ill replace them with ones from smoothdrags. Thanks for the help.

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | ABU 6600 C4 have come with Carbontex drag washers for say about 8 years or so, if is older then 8years then call Dawn and she will fix you up, I use a very lite coat of Cal's Grease on the washers just to waterproof them and so they start up smooth, but U do not have to grease them and the Carbontex washers will not be jerky dry. Also make sure the drag spring washers are ( ) when U put the reel back together on the drive shaft.
