Posts: 68 | I am trying to get the right prop for my aluminum boat, However They all say I need to hook up a tachometer to get the maximum performance out of my motor. I have a tiller and there is no tach on the boat. Is there anyone out there that has had the same situation? The tachometers are not that expensive but I do not know how to hook up. I still have a Fuel gauge that is not hooked up because I do not know how to wire that also. Thanks JB

Posts: 3508 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | JB...where you at? If you are in the twin cities area, I'd be willing to help you with the fuel gauge hook up. Not too hard to do... What kind of rig do you have? Any GPS speed that you have calculated and how is the boat coming out of the hole if you punch it? I'll help any way I can... Steve

Posts: 68 | Just moved to New New York State, 16 1/2' Smokercraft was a side Console I converted to a tiller. The motor is a 25 Mercury 2001 2 stroke, which I have had on three boats and it runs strong. But this has a 82" beam and weighs 625 empty so once I added the Batts (2) charger seats 10 Gallons Gas, and Gear and Outboard I'm guessing it's close to 1100 lbs...The Gps reads from 7 to 9 mph after trying several heights and motor pin positions. It did come up to 10 mph once when I put a 2x2 pc. of wood on top of the transom to raise the height 20" transom and long shaft motor I do have a Stingray Hydrofoil on the boat and was going to try and remove that. It does not come up on plane at all Thanks JB

Posts: 202 Location: Angola, IN | Your problem might be not enough motor...regardless of prop size/pitch. But I'm not certain. There should be a wire under your cowling that could be labeled "tach". If you get a "Tiny Tac" they are cheap and will do a great job. You just run a prop that get you close to max rpm's while at WOT. Problem is, do you really want to go out and buy a bunch of different props?

From my experience if the motor cant plane you out if a prop thats to agggresive then its a very long shot that a new prop will be the magic maker. I wont say it never happens but if you are getting only hull displacment speed with the 25 it will be real tough to get her out of the hole. Still play around with the basic setup, but i wouldnt go putting alot of money in props if after having the correct motor setup hasnt solved anything. It might be time for a larger motor

Posts: 68 | I did find out that the cavitation plate was 2 to 3 inches deeper in the water than the bottom center of the transom. I raised the motor about 3 inches and took off the sting Ray hydrofoil. I will try and get out one day this week and see if raising it helped at all........ thanks and I will get back to let you know the results. JB

Posts: 3508 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya, Your 1100 pounds is probably quite close for motor, gear, batteries, etc. Now...to get that boat up on plane? I would suggest you get another 25 horsepower on the back. I would not bother with getting a tach...it will not tell you anything other than the fact that your boat is way over-matched for your motor. Thy hydrofoil in your case should help as it helps create lift on the rear of the boat. Raising the motor up will help some, but nowhere near what you are looking to get to. I am wondering, though...what pitch of prop are you running? how old is the prop and is there a chance the hub is shot? Steve Edited by VMS 5/11/2013 8:08 PM

Posts: 568 Location: Lake St Clair | My friend has a 16' tracker, sounds like yours, probably same specs. He has an 89 25hp and with us two 200# dudes in the boat with fuel gear and whatnot it tops out at 27. Edited by mastical 5/11/2013 3:39 PM
