I use 80 or 100 lb braid and normally I tie my leader on with a Palomar knot however I leave about a 16 inch tag and tie 2 overhand knots together about 9 inches to a foot ahead of the leader. This gives me a double line and a knot to feel as the leader aproaches the rod tip.

Now the question do these overhand knots weaken the line and if so by how much?
Does it matter considering we fished for years using 36lb. dacron?

The simple answer is yes. I've seen tests that showed that a "safety knot" added absolutely no not strength and did in fact weaken the line. You also have to keep in mind that dacron had some stretch to it witch acts like a shock absorber, and was part of the reason a lower rated line worked.

ammoman16 do you happen to know where I could find those tests I would be very interested in looking at them?

It's been a while, but I believe there are some videos on youtube.

I'd say a fairly simple way to test this would be to tie your rig as you described and hook the leader to something solid. Then just pull until something breaks. If it breaks anywhere other than right at your safety knot (consistently), I'd say you're good to go.

I've done it this way for a couple of years and never had a line failure but I keep reading about overhand knots reducing line strength. On a couple of occasions when snagged on bottom I have had to cut the line because I couldnt break it. I don't actually think of it as a safety knot as much as a way of alerting me to the aproach of the swivel so I don't run it into the rod tip. May be I have to learn the Bimini Twist but I dont know if it can be done that short or if the Palomer knot works with a double line.

You could just tie a stop knot ahead of your trace, use thin rubber bands for tying mine.

Also good for keeping deeper lures like bulldawgs down as they come close to the boat if you tie one at 15 or 20ft. Just watch your thumb on the reel when you cast!
