Wow! what an afternoon..... was fishing on budd lake in michigan with a buddy and his daughter. Catching gills all day set out some tip-up's for pike. nothing. then all of the sudden.... FLAG! went to the tip up to see that the spindle was bobbing. Dang it ! fouled tip-up. anyway the tip up was crusted in and right when I grabbed it to unfoul it and feed some line I felt the weight. then I seen the fish... then.. nothing! bit off. got to see the fish through the ice and estimating the fish to be 45-50 inch. well... disgusted I re-assembled my tip up (and lucky tip-up I may add) put on a 7" sucker minnow and about 30 minutes later...FLAG! went over to it to see the spindle was'nt turning but the line was taken off out of the hole so I eased out the tip-up fed some line but he was no moving. so I took up some line then more. I felt him. Set the hook. Fought him for about 1-2 minutes seen this one again 45-50" variety he took one run past the hole turned himself over and bit me off. soon after that we called it a day but we will be back! I have always wanted to catch a muskie and would consider myself a die hard pike fisherman but these fish are amazing! thanks for listening to my story guys! and any tips you can provide will help.
Mainly was wondering how I got bit off so easily both times. I use 50lb Nylon line with 50lb 12" steel leader with treble and a rubber core weight. Would maybe using a 24" leader do the trick? I wasnt even close to icing these two moonsters[:((] thanks again guys!

Welcome to the site.

No I think you have a long enough leader, for that is about right for a muskie quickset rig. Now one thing you might want to consider is if the season is open for muskies in your area, to set the hook very quickly. You dont want the muskie to swallow the hook for it most likly will die from it. So setting the hook quickly will give you an outside the mouth hook up and your less likly of getting bit off.

Is the season open for muskies in your area? If not I recommend you wait until the season opens again next spring, because its not legal to bring them on the ice out of season[;)] [:)]

If you want to learn more about muskies since you just got the bug. Thats great. We here at MF are more the willing to help you become a muskie angler so stick around.[]

Yep no problem with the season here. spearing is banned however on this particular lake. we'll get 'em next time. also I was wondering if that is kind of uncommon that I got 2 flags within 1/2 hour in the same hole? I always heard muskies were difficult to catch (and are as it turns out at least for me) thanks guys! I will be asking questions in the future.

c.j.

Have you considered that you may not have been bit off? Perhaps the sharp edge at the bottom of your hole clipped you off when the fish took a run while you were holding the line?

yes I have thought about it and was wondering if there any suggestions to prevent the ice doing this to the line. the second fish it is a greater possibility i think because there was basically no line out on the first fish he didnt even move the spoot due to the tip-up being fouled. I would welcome any suggestions you guys might have. thanks!

The possibility of 2 fish on only one tip up is that you may of been sit up on highway 41.I think that fish will run lanes in the weeds much like we do roads.

CJ, Use a spud to chip ice at an angle on bottom of hole. This should help if the ice is cutting your line, you might want to make sure that you give line if the fish is pulling. One other thing is to kneel while landing your fish as this will lessen the angle and I seem to have more control. Good Luck, Tom

Great thanks for the tip and you had better believe I set up the location into my gps! thank guys! hopefully soon I can post a musky story with a happy ending. was talking to a non fisherman co-worker today and he said that he couldnt understand how I was so exited. I simply told him that Each time it was something like winning the lottery and soon realizing that your friends bought a fake winning ticket and gave it to you. also that the biggest pike I had ever caught was 38 inches and these fish were both a lot bigger than that fish.
