There was a 52" pure bred muskie caught this summer in a metro lake in MN. DNR stocking shows that there were 67 fingerlings stocked in 2010 and that was the first time they stocked pures in this lake. How could a fish grow that big in 2 years? The only explanation I can think of is that pures were privately stocked before and aren't shown on the MNDNR site. Any thoughts?

Illegal stocking occurs for many species. Could be someone got a hold on a batch of fish (somehow) and dropped them in. Or there's a connection somewhere with another lake or river system. Or someone's not telling the truth...

It's as simple as putting a fish in your livewell and bringing it home alive. Wouldn't recommend it these days with VHS, but it happens a lot more than you would think.

What lake? If it's the Calhoun chain, there were pure strain stocked there a while ago (15 years +/-).

There's no possible way for a 2 year old fish to be 52". It'd be the same as a 1 year old human being 6'3 in a year.
