Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Identifying muskie lure

I live in California and know next to nothing about muskie fishing. I was out bass fishing at a local lake today though and I saw a guy throwing muskie lures, apparently practicing for a trip up north. Since then I've been thinking I MUST try that lure he was throwing for big striped bass here at night. So my question is, can anyone tell me what lure he was throwing?

It was a large surface lure. He was ripping it across the surface in 2-3 foot jerks. The lure didn't seem to have any action (didn't dive or walk), but it threw a ton of water through the air and made a loud tearing sound on every jerk. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Nico

Sounds like something close to a giant popper/chug bug or something similar. I bet it had a gouged (concave) nose to catch alot of water. Check on websites like Rollie and hellens (www.muskyshop.com) and maybe they have a pic of it.

Sounds like an Amazon Ripper. Maybe he's heading to the Amazon for peacock bass.

Topper Stopper or Topper Propper would do this if worked in that manner. Could also be a Globe type lure.

Dan Gapen makes a bait that sounds like this too. It also was designed for peacock bass.

Thanks for the replys everyone.

I'm pretty sure it was a wood chopper, or similar lure. Just have to try it out for myself now :)

Good fishing,

Nico

Could have been a Hellraiser Cherry Twist. I have sold alot of those in the South West over the last 12 years. Make some Saltwater models for use in So. Cal and Baja also. matter of fact back in 94 or 95 the Nevada State record Striper was caught on a Hellraiser - night fishing right below the Hoover Dam it was right around 70 lbs !!
