I am looking at getting an electric 12v trolling motor for my boat and curious what you guys have and what you think is the best route. I have the chance to buy a new motorguide 54lbs thrust and 12v for $350 just curious on what your thoughts are?

thanks for any input

Both the Motorguide and Minn Kota are good motors, can't go wrong with either one. I have a Motorguide on my boat and no problems in the 10 years I've had it. Mike.

Minnkota Terova with I-pilot.  Would not even consider a cable steer TM.  Save your $ and buy the right one the first time!

If the motor guide 12V is what you can afford right now you wont be dissatisfied with it. This is the trolling motor I started with and never had any problems. I just upgraded to a different one after getting a bigger boat. It's a good stable platform to use. Good luck

As far as dependability goes Motorguide motors are phenomenal! I have had mine serviced once the entire time I have owned my boat and it is because it was my fault. As long as everything works on the motor you will be satisfied. Is it a cable steer or a digital steer? I have a digital steer motor and I use the original pedal!!! No issues. However I am a big fan of digital steer or the minn kota PD or terrova steering, not so much the cable steer motors...no freedom with cable steer motors.

I agree on the cable steer... can't stand it. It does give you quicker reaction time, and some guys love them, but to me they are hard to steer at the exact direction I want. Also, I've found that you need to keep your foot on the pedal at all times, otherwise it will turn on it's own. I like electric steer, I can set it on constant power when necessary and then pretty much ignore it, rather than stand on one foot and try to balance, steer and fish all at the same time. As far as brands, I've only had one motorguide, the rest minnkota, but I'm sure they're both good. Just make sure you get the steering configuration that you're looking for because there is a big difference.

Another vote for Minnkota Terova with I-pilot, if you can spend the extra money...

Its a cable steer motorguide pro series 54lb thrust 12v going on my 16ft bass tracker. I currently have a 28lb.thrust minnkota that was awesome for many years.. So any motor will be an upgrade.. I am interested in the minnkota powerdrive but have heard bad things about the.motherboards crapping out
