Hi guys. I am looking to get into muskie fishing this year and wondering what rod I should be looking for? I know there are different rods for different presentations but what are the most versatile rods until I can build my collection? I have spent a lot of time walleye fishing but would like to try the muskie scene. Any reel recommendations? Thanks!

well being kind of versatile probably a 8' ft rod will throw everything probably in a MH or H will throw a bunch of different baits like different size bucktails and some dawgs and topwater stuff ect. price range is up to you I would say for the money Tackle Industries rods are best. A reel I would definately recomend a shimano calcutta, I like the 400te but the 400b is cheaper, either one you can throw pretty much any bait and it will do the job and have more longevity.

Depending on your comfort level a 7'6" to 8" rod will do the trick with most lures. Actions and lure weights are subjective between brands so watch for that a bit. For someone new to the sport I find most of the medium heavy action rods a bit more forgiving but I certainly wouldn't be shy about goinig to a heavy action if you think you'll be throwing stuff with a bit more weight to it. Too many possibles out there to suggest just one rod.

How much money do you want to spend? I would get one that will handle both bucktails and crankbaits; and go from there.

I want to get a decent rod and good reel. Not really set on a price but don't want to spend a fortune yet.

Since you're looking for 1 all around setup, I'd go with a Tackle Industries 9' XH and a calcutta 400b or revo 60. With this you should be able to handle just about everything other than constantly burning big blades.

Bang for your buck, St Croix Musky Mojo in 8' heavy action and an Abu Garcia Record high capacity.

Depends what you're throwing and how much you're willing to spend. I'd stick with a 7'6" or WTD baits and jerkbaits. 8' to 9' for bucktails.
