Location: Appleton | First off I love Bulldawgs and they catch fish but lately I've used the H2o Hard Head and found it to be more versitile than the bulldawg. You don't need a shallow hard head and deep hard head in every color you want. You just add weight them or flip the tail up or down to change the depth. Just another option. I fish them from the opener to close just as I did the bulldawg. When water temps are warmer I'd make more erratic rips with them. During cold fronts I'd make a slower sweep. Depth I fish them depends on where I located bait fish. I caught a musky on a Hard Head last night working it higher in the water over 15'. Most of the bait was higher and so were the muskies. Hope this helps.

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Well, I'm not deeming myself a Dawg master, but have caught most of my fish on them. First off, I don't even own any regular dawgs. Probably should, but just don't. After having 30" fish on a Pounder, I just don't see the need to get anything smaller than a Mag. My favorite color depends on the lake, it's clarity, blah blah blah. But, nonetheless, out of the 35 different colors I own, the most to get the nod are golden tailed sucker, natural sucker, gold tail walleye, white tail walleye, black, sherbert, cisco, brown tailed carp. I have upped my % on turning follewers into biters this year by actually slowing down my figure 8's. And not actually 8's. I now do D's. As the bait is on the rise towards the boat, I do 1 last sweep upwards and faster than what I have been doing to try to trigger a strike then. Sometimes, it works. If there is a slow following fish, I go super slow into the D. Way out from the boat, then accelerate in a straight line along the boat.
When fishing a Magdawg shallow, I use a shallow dawg. When fishing one deep, I'll count it down to the desired depth, then work it in.
I'll use a Pounder if I'm working an area that has held big fish before. Also, if I know they are deep, and want a faster presentation, I'll use a Pounder. The Pounders tend to run a couple feet deeper, and you can work them faster than a Magdawg.
My usual retrieve is sweep-sweep-sweep. But if fish are hanging on a deep edge of weeds, I'll go to a popping retrieve. I'll also do that in the fall when the fish are a little sluggish.
Size hooks- The newer dawgs I keep them as they are. The older ones I switched to a 7/0 with Bucher split rings.

Almost all of them.

Just like any other lure. Medium speed if I don’t see a fish and fast if there’s a fish on it. I don’t impart any action into any lure on a figure eight, just spin that thing around the eight and you’ll catch fish.
when do you jerk, pull, or snap a bulldawg?
Each has a time and place as each imparts a different action, find some clear water and play with them. This is the most versatile bait you’ll own, learn everything it can do. The best advice I can give is to go out one day and only take three lures a reg. dawg, a mag dawg and a pounder fish each with every possible retrieve you can imagine.

time of year – From June through ice-up
water temp – This doesn’t have any bearing fish location is more important
clarity – Everything except muddy water (I’m talking zero visibility not just dirty)

Depends on where the fish are located and their reaction to how I’m fishing.

Straight crank from medium to BURN. If I want a stop/start retrieve I’ll fish it with the reel (crank, pause, crank, pause) this will keep it high in the water column.
how do you fish a pounder when fishing deep?
Depends on what “deep” is…
For 6-20’ a rip or pull and pause, the length of rip/pull and pause dictates the depth, generally I want it 4-8’ above their heads. If we’re talking fish hanging in weeds on the bottom in 20-25’ I’ll cast it and count it down to about 5’ off bottom. The retrieve from that point will be relative to how I want the bait to behave and how the fish have been moving.

Mag – Mustad 3551 7/0
Reg – Eagle Claw 774 4/0

water temp – 39 to 39
clarity - Everything except muddy water.
The rest is the same as a pounder.
regular
when do you throw a regular bulldawg?
time of year – Ice-out through August.
water temp – 39 – 80
clarity - Everything except muddy water but they shine in clear water.

I use this bait for shallower presentations when I want something smaller (severe coldfront)
The rest is the same as above.
