Subject: Viper riding too deep ?

I have used Viper and the action isn't that great for top water lure
since it's diving too deep

- any idea why ? ( It's in like new shape)
Also there is brass insert with thread about 1' behind the front hook.
What is this for ?

You're possibly not giving the lure enough slack when you "hit" it. The brass insert is for a screw in weight, made commercially by Fudally, Jo Musky and The Bermingham Bros..

Jonesi is right,,,your probably not giving it enough slack and pause between twitches

Ive been using vipers since 98,,,this is a slow shoot out 90 degrees topwater,,,also never upsize the hooks on this has it will cause it to sink,,this lure is intended to ride IN the surface film not on top of it

What size of hooks you have on it ?
Did you plug the weight screw in hole ?

I've never plugged the hole although I guess it will allow a small amount of water into the bait. Not a big deal IMO.

I guess the bait is plastic so it shouldn't matter if it's wet inside.

These are also awesome erratic glide baits, with a 1 oz. screw in weight. Go to the weeds and work it fast and hold on.
