Location: Eagan, MN | How do you position your rods when you troll? I've seen tip up in the air, level w/ the water, and even stuck down in the water. What are the advantages? And do you point them straight out, or angle towards the stern? I'm using ram holders. |

Location: Yahara River Chain | In a lake with floating weeds its best to have the tip in the water so that the floating weeds don't run down the line and foul the bait. They hang on the rod, but your bait keeps working. The rods pointed out help spread the baits out. In a lake with no floating weeds, I like to point my rods straight out as you can read the lure action transmitted to the rod. |

Location: Money, PA | For me, it really depends where I'm trolling and how I'm trolling. If I'm trolling a lake like Chautauqua which typically contains a lot of floating weeds and debris, I will run all my rod tips down in the water to catch the weeds before they ride down my line to the lure. They will be set at different angles but all at least touching the water surface. On the contrary, when fishing the Kawarthas in the spring and riding above submerged weeds, I'll troll with tips just above level...It all really depends if I want my lure to ride up above submerged vegetation or to get down as deep is I can get it by keeping the tip low. And the last factor would be if I have 3 people in the boat and I'm running more rods....When running 6 rods, I'll run 2 straight out the side then 2 toward the back of the boat which are "down" rods positioned almost straight up-n-down in the water and short-lined and finally 2 back rods running straight out the back and in the prop wash. |

| In lakes with a floating weed problem, ex. chautauqua, Itis best to troll with your rod tips under water. Another little trick is to always run a cigar shaped 1 to 2 oz inline sinker, leader about 5 ft. to the lure. The sinker will catch many of the floating weeds that slide off the rod tip and on down the line. No matter how you position your rods, check the lures every 5 to 10 min for weeds. Using low stretch braid like power pro, it's often possible to clear the line, lure by ripping, yanking the weeds off.
I fish alone 95% of the time and run 2 rods in down east rod holders, down, cocked back at a 45 degree angle, with the tips couple inches under the surface. Hope this is of some help. |

Tips as high as I can get them for in line planner boards. I use Traxstech Vertical Bird Trees. They are awesome. Having the lines high with boards keeps them from digging in with waves. I also like the rod holders (tree) as far forward in the boat as I can get it. It really opens up the back of the boat for working fish and puts the boards closer to perpindicular to the boat. |
