Was looking into the Minnesota Musky Tournament web site and saw the information on the Metro Tournament, which was already held. In the information it said it was being held on the 12 best musky lakes in the Twin Cities area. I noticed Tonka was not on that list? Those of you who fish the metro lakes a lot, wouldn't you consider Tonka in the top 12? If not why does it seem to get so much fishing pressure for musky? I do realize it does get heavy with recreation traffic during the day, but even still if someone was willing to put up with it why not have it included so it could be fished? Your thoughts..Thanks,

Andy

Andy,

It is most likely due to the fact that the # of tournaments that can be held in MN is limited. The tournament promoter must apply for his tournament and certain "Grandfather" tournaments receive permits before others. Tonka is a heavily fished tournament water and I'm sure if it was included that it would near impossible to get the permit approved. Just my .02

It was kinda nice fishing Tonka on June 8th with my son....he got his first and for some reason not that many guys were out.

If you fished Tonka last September in the PMTT you would think it's the GREATEST lake on the planet! We had 6 durring pre fishing and durring the tourement but none over 40"s. From what I heard it was a tough bite for most of the year and she realy turned on the week before the PMTT.
If you get the chance to fish it GO!

Congrats Evan!! Eric's been too busy with baseball to fish much, but that's done now, and no football for him this year. Maybe he can get the skunk out of this new boat!

Steve,

Part of the reason you had Tonka to yourself that weekend was the metro tournament, and North Metro's June Jam. Alot of guys were fishing other bodies of water. I can't wait for Saturday morning to come. Oh, and last year the PMTT caught 38 fish over 40". If I remember the writeup correctly, they said that was more 40"'s than they had caught in the history of the tour. So, Yes it is one of the best lakes, and one of the hardest to get on for tournaments. It also gets alot of recreational traffic. If you don't like jet ski's, water skier's, cabin cruisers, sailboats, or people just out for a spin, stay away. If you can live with it come out, and cast a line. Remember to bring your bass rods also. If you just need to feel a tight line before you leave, just go dock to dock on your way off the lake. It is one of the best, if not the best, lakes in the state for bass.

Im sure Steve is right,,the bassmaster pros say its the best bass lake in country so theres lots of bass tourneys too,,I too belive that tonka is not in the metro tourny because of no permit space left,,also left out of the metro tourney are the downtown Mpls, St Paul lakes because of trolling motor only regs

I found the writeup on the PMTT from last fall. You judge if it is a great lake or not.

PMTT Musky Hunter Magazine's Fall Showdown Proves to be Incredible
By Steve Weisman

PMTT Publicity Director

The muskie were "on the bite" at the Professional Musky Tournament Trail's (PMTT) Musky Hunter Magazine's Fall Showdown on Sept. 15-16. Held at Lake Minnetonka, MN just west of Minneapolis/St Paul, PMTT teams caught and released 38 muskies over 40 inches (40 inches is the legal length limit in Minnesota)!

Leading the way with three legal muskies of 42 3/4" - 41 1/2" - 41 1/2" was the team of Gregg Thomas (KY) and Dave Grochowski (OH). They cashed a check for $16,000.

Second Place and a check for $4,000 went to Phillip Combs (KY) and Wendell Childers (KY) for their 4 1/2" and 48 1/2" fish. According to PMTT Director Tim Widlacki, the bite was simply incredible. "We have never had so many 40" + fish registered in a tournament before. In fact, we have probably never had that many 40"+ fish registered ever, in all the tournaments combined."

With weather conditions stable and clouds both days, the anglers could concentrate on catching the aggressive Lake Minnetonka muskies. A total of 22 legal muskies over 40 inches were measured on Saturday and 16 on Sunday.

The bite was a shallow weed bite. Widlacki noted, "It was very shallow, one to three feet deep of weeds. Teams used baits that could make it through them. Bucktails, topwater, crankbaits, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, minnow and twitch baits of all shapes, sizes and colors, all produced fish." Although the key was the shallow weeds, another piece to the puzzle was if the wind was blowing up into them. "That made the bite all the better," added Widlacki. The Thomas and Grochowski team, however, was one team that had success casting the weed edges. "They were out over deep water throwing jerkbaits up on the shallow edges and reeling it off into deep water, " said Widlacki

Widlacki added, "These two guys were also the winners of the first ever PMTT Invitational Championship in 1999 and the Top Gun Team of the Year winners that same year. They also tied for third in the Invitational Championship last year. Talk about consistent." With the Minnetonka qualifier, a new Top Gun Team of the Year has emerged. Dale Wiley (PA) and Todd Young (PA) caught a huge 49" monster, that they caught casting shallow weeds with Wiley jerkbaits manufactured by Wiley, himself. This fish propelled the Pennsylvania duo into the lead slightly over a100 points ahead of their nearest competitor.

It also game Wiley and Young the $500 Big Fish for Sunday, while Saturday's $500 Big Fish was a 48" muskie caught by PJ Mcdeid (MN) and Scott Dickenson (MN).

Next up for the PMTT will be the Invitational Championship where the top teams will converge at Pewaukee Lake in Wisconsin Oct 13-14 to determine who the top PMTT team is.

Widlacki once again noted the importance of sponsorship to the PMTT. Major sponsors for the PMTT including Ranger Boats, Mercury Marine, Musky Hunter Magazine, All Star Rods, and "The Fishing Guide" with Travis Richardson who, along with all the contributing sponsors are one of the reasons for the success of the Trail.
