My brother will be visiting from back east this summer and was wondering if I should take him to Pewaukee or Okauchee, hopefully, to get his first musky. I've fished both and tend to lean towards Pewaukee. I normally fish both during spring or fall and need some info about which baits to use during the mid summer time frame. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks all and good luck fishing this year!

Depends on what you are looking to do. Pewaukee has a well known trolling bite during the mid summer. Fish tend to be out on the breaks or suspended. Not to say you can't get fish up shallower, but lots of fish out away from the weeds.

Okauchee can have a good trolling bite, but we do well casting for them as well. So if you're looking to cast, I'd say Okauchee, trolling, Pewaukee would get the nod. Shoot me a PM and I'd be more than happy to help ya out.

Are there safe water temps mid-summer that far south?

There should be this year, but in most years by late July or early August the temps can get up there for a couple of weeks.

If you are looking for the most action I would give Pewaukee the nod. Pewaukee has more fish and can be caught cating or trolling even in the summer. The tougher part about Okauchcee is getting on the fish in my opinion. It is a great lake with big fish, but the deeper water and cisco base can make it a bear at times. If you are not real comfortable with secondary breaks or open water it can be tough to get on the fish in the summer.

Hey Gary,

I would look at Pewaukee, the trolling action can be excellent in mid summer (talk to the Extreme One), and you can cast the shoreline at dawn or dusk. The night fishing with top water propbaits is good also.

How's that Grandpa business going?

Guest, we usually have a week or two where we have to keep off the muskies in August. It seems like 80 degrees is the mark they get fragile. Anytime the temps get into the high 70's and over, water releases are a must. Way less stress on the fish if it never is removed from the water.

As for the trolling bite on Pewaukee it can be very very good. Okauchee also can be very good at this same time. Just different patterns. Trolling and casting on Okauchee can get you fish just like Pewaukee. For numbers Pewaukee will get the nod and big fish I would have to say Okauchee. They are just bigger on average.

I would be happy to help you out with any info your looking for on either lake but Pewaukee is my sweet spot after living on it all my life. Big fish, numbers and multiple patterns is why I fish it. Pewaukee is hands down one of the best lakes in Southeastern Wisconsin. Heck I would put it up there with most lakes in Wisconsin.

Joel (Tuffy1) is the go to guy on Okauchee. He has some big fish patterns over there that are proven year after year. He is also a great guide and friend.

Go with one guy throwing topwater the other a bucktail on Okauchee in the morning then pull off at noon and join the trolling merry - go - round on Pewaukee.
Weather will be a factor - Pewaukee is not fun with winds over 20 mph especially out of the west. You can always find good fishable water on Okauchee even on very windy days.
