Location: Eau Claire, Wisconsin | does anyone know if there is a beginners class on rod building in the Eau Claire wisconsin area. i would like to get started and dont really know what supplies i need to get or what and where i should start. i think a class would be a great starting piont. any help would be great. lot of information out there wheres a person suppose to start. what is the adverage cost of start up. would people recommend starting out by buying high end tools and equipment or would a person buy a cheep start up kit and slowing up grade from there once a person gets into it more.

Location: Slippery Rock, PA | I've built approx. a dozen or so rods. Most important item is a rod drying motor for turning rods after epoxy is on wraps. Quality of cork is important too. Get a catalog or call mudhole and ask questions. They helped me. You don't really need any high end tools to get started. I built most of mine myself. Any specific questions, you can pm me. |

It's not near Eau Claire but the Madison Muskies Inc chapter has a musky school in March and one of the courses is on rodbuilding. It's a pretty good event with a lot of good instructors (Steve Worrall included) and might be worth the trip.

| I have built around a dozen rods and am self tought. I would agree with the drying motor for the epoxy. But there is one very important thing I have also learned it always start out hand turning for the first hour. If you start it out on the motor and you have a very substantial cross weave patern you will actualy leave almost a screw patern in the epoxy from the constent turning. The other thing I will tell you is your first rod will take you FOREVER!!!!!!
I look back at my first rod and my last rod and they both took the same amount of time but the first one looked like my 5 year old daughter built it!! The last one has a very intracate weave pattern that makes a fish, in about 10 different colors and 60 mile "hahaha" of thread.
I started out with Cabela's they have kites with everything you need, epoxy, thread, real seats, eyes, real seat arbors, EVERY THING!!!!
Have fun, and LOTS of patience!!!!!!!
Your first one will determine if you have it in you or not......
FYI my first rod took 40 hours to make............:-O

| I still have the first stick I built several years ago. I never used it. Guides are not straight and the glue is not the best. I would recommend going with an inexpensive blank to start.
It would be best I think to find a class but you sure could learn yourself. Putting the glue on is that part that you will get better with over time.
I am headed up to Walker MN next week to do a class of 10 high school kids. Really is the first time I have put on a class. I am kind of excited to teach others the joy of building.
