I have been thinking about buying a rod that can handle some of the heavier rubber baits out there and have targeted either an 8' MI Super Mag Rod or a 7'9" St. Croix Premier XXXHF - anyone with any experience with these rods? I know there are a lot of other great rods out there but I want to stay under $200.

Do you palm your reel or use the foregrip? If you palm your reel do you have long arms? I tossed an MI rod yesterday for several hours and had mixed feelings about it. Butt section was way too short for a reel palmer, just fine if you used the foregrip. I palm my reels 95% of the time and the butt section ended in my arm pit. Super uncomfortable and zero hooking setting leverage that way. When I used the foregrip the butt was positioned just fine, extended past my pit and would have offered excellent leverage.

Hope that helps!

Shane...talk to Keith at Pro Edge about one of his super heavy Edge series rods.
right in your price range and more than up to the task (i was throwing the 13" suzies with it with ease this year).
he uses a quality blank and the rod is hand-built by someone who stands behind his work here on the site.

I picked up the xxx Premier in 7'9 last July and didn't want to put it down for the most part. Their new blank is thinner and lighter. One real difference I notice is that thinner blank cutting water beside the boat on a figure eight. I use a 7000 with 100# on mine and it throws the 2lb bootails I tie well. I tried it with a weighted 13" Suzy and it throws them fine also. So far I think it's a super rod. I paid $159 CDN for mine. I know that Premiers also expanded the Warranty on that line also, it's not just two years anymore. For such a roof truss of a rod, it's real light and lots of days I'd have it going 10/12 hours. Good luck.

Esox50, I just compared butt sections on my Croix,Fig, and Super Mag musky Inno rod and their all within a 1/2 inch. Does the XXXX have that much longer of a butt section? I palm all my rod/reels and have no problem with any of them.

Hmmm. Were you measuring an Avid or Premier? I just ran outside to measure my 8' MH Premier: 14" from base of reel seat to bottom of butt cap. 7'6" MH Avid, 7'6" H Fig Rig Tooth Tamer, 7'6" M Fig Rig Tooth Tamer measure out at 12", 13.5", 12.5" respectively. Odd that the two Fig Rigs don't measure the same, but they were ordered in different years so maybe that explains it.

Also, I think a lot has to do with your arm length. Shorter arms I think you have less to worry about re: short butt sections. Longer arms it might present more discomfort. Not sure where my 29" arm length falls, but I feel pretty strongly about the butt section. Could also be the position you hold your reel from your chest that determines comfort level too.

It all boils down to personal comfort and preference. Sort of like the great Chevy v. Ford (or Dodge, Tundra, etc) debate; everyone has their favorites, just a matter of personal preference.

It was a Premier, and a Toothtamer Fig. I agree totally everybody is different. I thought about it all last nite and I think im going to take my SuperMag back tonite and go get the 7'9" XXXX it sounds like there's way too many people that are in love with them on this board. And my 6'9" Extra Heavy Croix has been my favorite for years!!

MUSKY INNOVATIONS Super Mag in 8'6" is ONE SWEET ROD !!!!!!!!!!!!!
After using this rod last year, I got 3 other MUSKY INNOVATION Rods last week for next year !!!! Replacing all my St Croix Avids and Premier Rods with the M/I Rods. I will be using 8' and 8'6" long rods for next year.
