I have one these rods and I use it a lot. Definitely a good crankbait rod. But I also used it for bulldawgs a lot until I got a 7'9 XXXH. But yes, the rod is a good rod, but couldn't tell you about heavy bucktails. I'm sure it would do fine.

I have the rod, and I"m not terribly fond of it for heavy bucktails. I'd rather throw them on my Dback. The St Croix has just a little too much tip stiffness, and doesn't load real well with them. It's a great crankbait rod for anything Depthraiders on up.

I use this rod for jerk baits, 11" & 13" suzies, and big bucktails as well as larger cranks and twitch baits.

The 7'6' MH i have is a bit to stout for me. It has a 1/3 oz rating aswell does my 7'6" MH Avid, and you can tell there's a HUGE difference between the 2.

I use a 7'6" avid H for bigger bucks and cranks and like it alot. Any chance of borrowing one to use for a day before you buy one?

The 7'6"H is my favorite rod! It is great for everything except the biggest baits.
I just bought the 7'9"XXX for my heavy plastics and am acclimating myself to throwing the Pounders and 13" Suzy Suckers. Now I just need to hire a team of chiropractors and pharmacists! My back will go before this rod ever gives.

How are the XXX rods for fighting fish? My biggest worry about these is that they are too stiff to keep a good bend in the rod when a fish starts to shake it's head. I held off on buying one this year to see what kind of feedback I could get on them.
