| Earlier this year I got an idea for a color I haven't seen on crankbait before. A yellow back to make it more visible against the dark bottom, and a black belly to make it more visible agains the surface, and in between green sides with yellow stripes. I sent this idea as a photoshopped picture to a crankbait manufacturer (Zalt for those who wonders), and they kind of liked the idea so they made some prototypes for test fishing before it possibly hits the stores, and were kind enough to send me a sample as well, and below is an actual photo of the finished result that they sent me.
I have tested it for northern pike fishing, and it worked great, and it actually outfished the regular colors on that one day I tried it (have only tried it once so far, but it was the only color that was succesful that one day). What do you people think of this idea? Seems as it worked fine for me, so it's possible that it'll be available for retail in the future, we'll see what Zalt decides to do about that.

Location: Yahara River Chain | It should bve called reverse contrast. I have buddy that 1st did that over 20 yrs ago. Black bottom, scale pattern on the side and yellow top.
Most likely won't be a top seller, but its a great idea! |

Seriously though. Look at the old paint jobs on war planes, white bellies, because they were harder to see against the sky looking up. the tops of war planes? camo, because the were harder to see looking down from above. Bait fish? same deal.

The dark-back/light-belly patterns in nature is called obliterative shading. The best example is found in open water, ocean species such as tunas, sharks, etc. It helps prey and predator disappear from above or below. Also, sunlight will lighten the dark back, the fish's shadow will darken the light belly, and from the side the fish washes out. So much for the science; the key is whether using reverse obliterative shading will make a bait stand out more, therefore stimulating more strikes. I bet in certain circumstances this will be true, but I can also see it being too much when fish are less active. I've always wanted to troll two oppositely shaded baits next to each other to test it out. Probably do it for walleyes (even a musky guy has to eat) since I can be sure to put the baits in front of lots of fish. |

That was exactly my thoughts when I came up with that idea, so I thought it was worth a try. And like I said, it worked great when I tested it myself. I don't know why it wouldn't be a top seller though (if it actually delivers that is), are most people too traditional and a bit "afraid" of trying new ideas? But we'll see, it has to actually hit the shelves first, and I don't know when Zalt will release their new colors for 2007. I'm glad you guys seem to like the idea though! |
