| I have 5 Garcia Ambasauders (dependable as the summer day is long), 2 Curados (almost better than sex) and 2 broken Quantuum Energy (pieces-o-crap). I would like to clean and lubricate the reels that work. Any tips? Thanks. |

| Yeah, good question. I am sending my muskie reels off to Sportmans Repair this year again. Been 2 years since they were gone over.
I'll clean and degrease my spinnig reals myself. But, what do you guys use as a cleaner degreaser for your reals. I used Gun Scrubber a while back and it works excellent for taking grease off. Problem is it also eats up plastic. Luckily, I got it off before it did any real damage.

| Sportsman's Repair shop does good work. However, a reel is not that complicated to clean and lube yourself if you are organized. I took a class that Chuck from the Sportsman's Repair shop gave last year. Here were some of his tips.
- lay out all of your tools, oil, etc. on a clean work space
- spread a shop towel out to lay everything on (keeps small parts from rolling)
- take only one side of the reel apart at a time
- if you have trouble keeping track of what order the parts came off in, use an empty egg carton to keep the parts in order.
- the pawl under the levelwind is the most likely part to need replacement
- use oil/grease sparingly. Too much just attracts dust.
- if your Abu is "screaming" when you cast, the big white gear needs a little grease. Should quiet it right down.
I now keep a screwdriver and some grease in my boat bag. That way if one of me reels (or my partners - right Derek!) starts to scream I can shut it up real quick.

| The 6500 and 5500 are not too bad to take apart. As others have mentioned use a shop towel and go slowly. You will be amazed at what you will find on the insides of these reels. For cleaning the bearings I use Starter Fluid with ether( sp ??). The Starter fluid will dissolve the grease and dry without any leftover residue. Let the bearings air dry spin a few times. | If you use starter fluid to clean reels, do it outdoors. For two reasons: first, it's flamable/explosive-that's why it's called starter fluid, second, it contains ether and that could put you to sleep or cause a bad headache. Also, it will soften plastic and desolve printing on plastic. |

| I took a 6501 apart last spring to clean it, and I videotaped it so that I could get it back together if I screwed up. I believe it was Moccasin Mike who wrote some very detailed directions on what to look for, how to do it- I used those. I think he suggested automatic transmission fluid/fine powder graphite as a lube. Also, 90 wt. rear end oil was mentioned as a possible lubricant. I'll look for those directions. Mike are you out there?
I used simple soap and hot water to clean parts. Reel was super smooth after that.
