I will be using both for the first three weeks of the season.

Live bait is a great asset when you bring in 1/2 interested fish while casting.

Casting will produce 1/2 of my fish each opener, live bait will score the other 1/2.

3 casting vs 3 on live bait last opener by noon Sunday. The year before it was 4 and 4.

Reels,

Small suckers in the 8 to 10-inch and usually one bigger one in the 14 to 16-inch range. I will run up to 4 suckers while casting when possible with clients.

I like to run a couple over the side of the boat and also on slip bobbers as trailers while we cast. It's weird how some days the suckers close to the boat get nailed and other days the slip bobber rigs will get the action away from the boat. Anyway, in Spring the suckers WILL increase your odds of boating fish.

Some people don't like to use them. I believe they are just another tool in the arsonal.

I found that when fishing Crappie and Bass, I can catch WAY more fish with artificial baits. No questioning it.

For Muskies, I cast almost entirely, except for late Fall, when I may trail a sucker behind the boat. I asked some sucker fishermen why they only use them in the Fall, and they told me that larger suckers were not available to them over the summer. Who knew?

Good luck everybody.
