I have used 4 or 5 of the "newest, latest, best" lines over the last 10 years or so. I think I still have the 10 year old line on a couple reels and they are functioning well. Each one I have switched to has been very satisfactory.

I have found NONE of them to dig into the reel, and ALL of them to be minimal backlash lines in terms of handling. This summer I was up at R&H's and had a couple reels to fill and asked them their recommendation and filled with "Stealth" per their word, 80# bulk spool, whatever color. I don't get an opportunity to fish with other fisherman very often, so I don't get a lot of word of mouth info or the "try mine" experience, but I put 35-50 days a year in, mostly casting, and after all these lines and all those days, I find all of these lines satisfactory, and none of them really stand out from the pack for me to recommend them above all others.

I have had ugly experiences with spider wire when it first came out, and I would never use it again, but are there any other lines that would be best avoided, and for what reasons?

So I am curious, are there any of these lines that people getting a lot of cast time really don't like? And for what reasons.

I like Cortland because it seems to be most abrasion resistant, with Power Pro a close second. Spiderwire has performed well, too. Can't find it in 80 lb spools. Am I blind?

The only line I do not like is Tuff Line. Soaks up WAYYY too much water.

I'm sort of like you. In the past X number of years (since superbraids came out) I've used: Tuf-line in 60lb, Iron-Thread (put out by Fenwick) in 60 lb test, Untra-max put out by Berkley (60 and 80lb test). Orginal spiderwire is 80 lb test. Powerpro in 60 lb test. Fusion and Firewire in 60lb test (only ones that were a POS). Cortland Spectron in 60 and 80 lb test. Berkley Whiplash in 80, 100, 150, and 200 test. And now spiderwire stealth mostly in 100 lb test.

All seem to be pretty good except the fusion lines for casting. All are a big up-grade from the old dacron lines. The biggest thing is to use something that's around the same diameter as 20lb mono (80lb or so).

Power Pro is my first choice with cortland second. I like the thin 65lb Power Pro for my rods in Spring to early Fall. I have Cortland 80lb for the fall big stuff.

I use power pro, simply becuase it is the dryest line I have found. Less water on my hands in the late fall means less ice on my gloves and reel. It does have a tendency to dig-in backlash over tuff line which I think casts a whole lot better and more forgiving when you do backlash.

Tuff line XP - casts great - very forgiving. I've tried them all - Cortland Spectron is a very good line as well - more xpensive.

I spent the last two years using Gorilla Braid, and was very happy with it. I'm near sure that any 'problems' with line these days is going to be a matter of personal preference, not actual product problems.

Remember Stren Kevlar? Now THAT line was 'difficult'.
