| Where is a good place to buy basswood? Looking at carving some baits up to 10" long. Until now I have hand carved my own blanks out of cedar, redwood, and pine scraps lying in the garage. Thanks.........I love this forum!!!! |

Location: Eden Prairie & Pine Island | Its available at places like Rockler and other woodworking stores, but I try to get there only when its on sale. If you're only doing a few peices, the price is not a problem. There are other suppliers, but the quantities might not be your cup of tea. |

| Since we are on the topic...In the spring I'm moving from the twin cities to NE of Little Falls. And they are not any Rocklers or such in the area where I'm moving. Yes a couple of lumber yards, but I dont expect to find the wood I'm looking for in these lumber yards. So I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with good internet sources for wood for lures and such.
Thanks much - Pete |

Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | There's a lumber store in N Minneapolis, Phoenix is ringing a bell although I'm not sure. They've got the best selection of exotic woods I've seen there.
One thing about basswood is that it's not that tough. Teeth can easily be sunk into it and I'm not sold on the durability. I use hard maple primarily and cedar on some types. They're both pretty consistant when it comes to bouyancy.

| Tottcie, Try local cabinet shops, most have drop they have to pay to have taken away, and it is usually top quality hardwoods. Fencing companies that build cedar fences have plenty of drop as well. Doughnuts and beer work well and go a long way and make a memorable introduction. In north Mpls try Siwek lumber for 4 x4 x 2ft chunks. It might take some tracking down at first but the rewards can be onging and plentiful. Duff |

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | If you are up in the Walker area, there are plenty of basswood trees around. Find a place where you can cut one in the spring/early summer, peel the bark, cut into 14 inch or firewood sized chunks (split if desired) and let it sit for a year or more in a cool, dry environment. it will be all ready to go from then on. Definitely not the quick way to get wood, but definitely much cheaper than buying it, and with one tree you will have enough wood to make well over 300 baits.

Location: Fishing the weeds | You may want to try some of the local sawmills. They have plenty of off cuts and squaring cuts that they are more than willing to get rid of. Also cabinet shops as was said earlier. My father get's a lot of project wood from the dumpster behind a local shop. With their blessing of course. |
