Going to get my girl her first "big time" rod/reel ... Any suggestions about where I might pick one suitable for a 10 year old. Saw Bass Pro had a Bass Pro Baitcaster/ 7.6 ft heavy action rod for 69.99 .. any better combo available ? anyone have extra setups they don't use that are in excellent condition give me an email . If she already uses a spinning rod, do her a big favor and buy her a reel with the crank on the same side as her spinning reel. It will make her life so much easier.

My son who is now 9 started using my 6600C5 Ambassedeur/Cabela's Fish EagleII combo and he loves it. You don't need to go to the 6600 size of reel necessarily but its a good combo with external brakes for a good price, and has held up great over three years of fishing.

My daughter is 11. She uses a 6'6" Fenwick HMX MH and a Abu 5601SSC3 bait caster. For the complete rig you are looking at about $130-$140. GREAT rig as it is not a huge reel. It has a thumb bar which makes it really easy to cast. She also has a second rig of the same rod but with an Abu 5601C4. She has one 5.3:1 and one 6.3:1. Both are left hand cranking reels. She likes casting right handed and reeling with her left. I load both reels up with 65lb test line.

Depending on how big your daughter is, the 6''6" may be much easier for her to handle. It is tougher for adults to figure 8 with a shorter rod. With the kids much closer to the water it is easier. She threw my 7' and 7'6" with 6 sized reels, but liked her 6'6" with the 5 sized reels much better.

you can buy the pete maina bass pro combos for about 130. they are solid reels and good rods. they have a lifetime replacement warrantee, anything breaks just return it for another one. best quality musky value out there for the money imho.

My 9-year old is using a 6' 10" St Croix and a 6500C3 left hander. She asks, "Why bother switching hands?"
It's lightweight and she doesn't have any trouble controlling the casting or retieving.

We have the same set up as C nelson for our daughter. She is 7 The fenwick set up is light so she can cast a good 4 to 5 hours before fatigue sets in.

It's great to see she is interested in muskie fishing. I think she would be able to use a low profile bait caster the easiest. It would fit her hand the best and cast smooth and the brake systems will help with backlashes. Here is a nice low cost reel that Pfleuger makes that would work real well for her.
