Location: Athens, Ohio | The fender skirts on my Moonshine Trailer have rotted and are rubbing against the inside of the tires - not good. It looks like Moonshine used 1/8 inch luauan plywood and stapled carpet on that. Moonshine is now out of business so I guess I'll have to build my own replacements. Figure I'll soak the wood in Thompsons before adding the carpet. Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions are welcome. thanks! m

Posts: 107 Location: milwaukee | cincinnati - 11/7/2005 2:30 PM As a metals supply company employee, whose job security is pretty nervous, I'm obligated to say "Aluminum!" Ya know, I was considering going that route when I replace mine this winter. I'm thinking diamond-plate, but how would one attach the carpet? Rivets? Screws with fender washers? I need the scuff protection the carpeting provides.

Location: Athens, Ohio | I've settled on the luaun plywood with a heavy dose of water seal. Glue then staple the carpet. I found some of the same self-tapping screws the mfg. used to attach the completed skirt to the fender (never thought Lowes would have them but they did!). I think I can build each fender then mount the completed product to the trailer without moving the boat. Turns out my trailer mfg. is out of business, but the guy who answered the phone at the old number still sells trailers and he was very helpful. thanks, m

The glue &/or the carpet backing will eventually give out, so I'd run a couple of small screws or rivets in critcial locations to prevent "catastrophic fly-off!" I know that diamond plate is available as thin as .100, which makes it light & easy to fab. Edited by cincinnati 11/8/2005 3:17 PM

Talk to someone at a carpet store and get some adhesive they use for outdoor carpeting on cement. It will be very durable and not break down when exposed to moisture. MR

Posts: 389 Location: Corning, Iowa | What are you guys talking about? I've got a Shorelander trailer, and want to know what your talking about, so I can check mine. On another subject. Mikie, you gave me a web site with recycled plastic boards on it. I found some 2X 6 in a close town, that I'm going to cut down this winter. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks Doug

Location: Athens, Ohio | OK, on the inside of the wheel fenders is a board with carpet on the boat side that acts as a skirt to keep rock and stuff from flying off the tires onto the side of the boat. I have a trailer with dual axles, so the board is 5.5 ft. long, and now that it is rotten, the fasteners don't hold it to the fenders and it flaps in the wind and rubs on the inside of the tires. Went to Lowes and got 3 ft. of 6 ft. wide black boat carpet, 3/8 inch luauan plywood, some killer water seal, some carpet glue and new fasteners. Ran me about $50. Used the fenders as patterns and cut the plywood, got it water sealed, and the carpet glued and stapled. Going good so far. Good luck on the plastic lumber, I hope it doesn't damage your boat's finish. Not sure how or if it is different from the product on the web, let us know how it goes. m
