Location: NW burbs of Chicago | When I've just seen a fish go by? But then again, I've been working on trying to have longer casts sans backlashes this year, so that's mostly what I've been doing.

| When I target something. A shorter cast is much more accurate.
Throwing at a log, or stump, or milfoil edge or pocket...I'll make much shorter casts.

| Fishing stump fields or laydowns short casts are a necessity. Think about it. It's easier to toss a bean bag in a trash can 10 feet away than it is if the trashcan were 60' away. Hit each branch or stump precisely and from different angles. This can only be accomplished by "sniping" the structure.
Also, thick, sloppy weedbeds are not conducive for long-bomb casts. You have less control over your bait and it is harder to hit pockets or other small nuances in the weedbed. |

| Also shorter casts work better in heavy current situations and in gale force winds. I see alot of fishers drifting with a very heavy wind and making a football cast in those 2' waves, not good as you loose alot of control and feel! I think you possible can miss alot of fish, going long! |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Unless I am parallel to a long breakline or weedline, I usually fire LOTS of short casts at where I feel the fish should be. Long casts are the exception for me unless topwater fishing on large expanses of good water. |

| I have been working a lot on boat control this season, and one of the things I'm trying to learn is about doing a better job covering an area. Because of that, I have found myself making much shorter casts because I know I will be doing several runs through an area covering the various depths. I think that has been more successful of a technique for me, as you have more control over the bait, and it also forces you to spend more time targeting a specific area rather than plowing through there once and giving up because you didn't see a fish. |
