Long time lurker first time poster.

I’ve been fishing some waters in Northern MN a lot more the last 2 years and I’ve noticed both years that some really nice cabbage spots are mostly or completely gone by late August/early September. Not even dead/brown, but just gone. I know all water bodies are different, but this just seemed quite early to me. Water temps were still around 70 degrees. Has anyone else noticed something similar? Other waters I’ve fished seem to hold the cabbage until later.

From what I am seeing in northern Wisconsin is wake boats are pushing sand and muck up and it’s filling in the small gravel bars and changing the bottom composite in areas. So we are losing gravel bars for the Muskies and walleyes to broadcast spawn on and it’s filling in areas that had weeds or choking them out.

I was on the Three Lakes chain first week in August and hooked some cabbage and it was brown and mushy when I took it off the hooks. Couple other guys in league mentioned rotting weeds that week. Don't know cause.

Unfortunately, in WI, the legislature will not do anything to restrict wake boats beyond some tepid measures like requiring 200 ft from shore. Our assembly rep for Oneida/Vilas took a ride in a wake boat with the major dealer in the area last year and thought they were just fine. He refuses to look at studies to the contrary. The reality is that a lot of fishermen complain, but don't take action. Our rep's office told me my e-mail was the only one with a negative response to the newspaper story about his joy ride. If true, that means a lot of fishermen who complain have not contacted someone who could make a difference.

ok, so take the same rep , Put him in a 12-14’ aluminum boat, canoe or small vessel with ma and pa, and possibly a youngster, and have him experience a 3+ ft. wake boat coming through inside of 100 ft. And see how safe he feels then! I understand the topic is weeds here, but it’s peoples  lives that can be at stake.

There needs to be time frames for these wakers, say 11 am to 5 pm, and allow other people use the lake with some kind of safety factor involved , or size of bodies of water restrictions for these vessels.

Being polite, my representatives's. physique would lend itself much better to a wake boat ride than to a 12' rowboat

Few things about weeds, as a teenager I would go home from my summers on the 28th of August and the shallow weeds would be turning brown by then, I've been on lakes that had lust think cabbage beds and then one trip gone plan gone. (rusty crawfish) With those giant weed beds gone we would catch muskies in narrow bands of weeds that used to be drive bye spots. Also we have been on lakes where at the start of the trip we would we would be catching Muskies in certain weeds than the weeds would get some slimly stuff on them after that no more Muskies in that spot intill the next year.

It was really brought home to me how intrusive the wake boats are at the muskie league I joined this summer. Two different guys said how they loved the small chain I live on because it is not hospitable to wake boats. One commented that what you see are modestly powered pontoons and fishing boats. No wake boats, no tritoons with twin 300hp motors. I know from fishing the Three Lakes Chain how recreational boating can really interfere with fishing but found their comments informative.
