southern comfort - 5/21/2025 10:11 AM What are the predictions of what this cold wet weather this week will do to opener. Will muskies be post spawn or still spawning. We normally see them spawning right by our dock. However, we have had 4 or 5 days of wind and if they are there, we have not seen them. I usually know what stage they are at just by watching but as one of my neighbors, who has lived on the lake for over 20 years said, we just don't see sustained east winds like this.

Posts: 1506 Location: Brighton CO. | A number of years ago I was in western Wiscosin and it was the first part of Apral and the muskies were spawning a cool sight indeed. West and south from where you are. Every year it's little different for the same place depending on the weather. But very fun thing to do each spring if you live in the area. Also fun to watch when the ice goes off every spring.

Got out for a couple hours yesterday morning for a couple hours before company came and water was 55. That was more than 10 degrees difference from when I put my boat in about 10 days ago. Cold nights have really dropped it here in the Rhinelander area. Could see some of the neighbors had covered outside plants to protect them from potential frost. Don't think I have seen that before on the northern open.

Ohhhhhh, you definitely have, it was maybe 5years ago a cold snap hit the whole state and we had below freezing for most of the morning. That was before I knew any of the cold water tips and tricks I've learned from you all. So we had a F***in propane heater in the boat we were using to warm hands and thaw reels ![]() Same change in water temp over here, had 58-62 avg surface temps on smaller bodies weeks prior. Had 51 yesterday, warmest water we could find was 61 and that was a downwind side+0-3'ft deep large Lilly pad muck flat in a shallow bay. Judging by the sky above and the weather yesterday I think I was perfectly positioned at a Vergence of 2-3 weather/pressure systems. Needless to say, but 0 fish for myself opening day. Couldn't find a pattern. Got some pike for the garden though.

Huh, don't remember it being that cold on an opener. Convenient memory? 8 years ago I was in Alaska when the northern opener took place and that was a really warm one. It was warm where I was in SE Alaska as well. Helped with a pole building for my sister and brother in law. They said it was the nicest week of the whole year. And me with a bag full of long johns, hooded sweat shirts and wool socks.

Posts: 1506 Location: Brighton CO. | Cold fronts in the spring can really screw up fishing for the season as far as weed development but at the same time it can help as far as keeping water temps lower this summer. How many times have we seen water temps in the low 80's not long after 4th of July. In my part of the country we got some much needed rain and nice cool temps.
