Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | Ok guys/gals, I have some lures that live in my boat...right now a bunch of them have pretty rusty hooks... I already replaced hooks on the worst lures (about 12) but some of the others still sharpen up pretty good. Sooo… should I replace even the least rusted hooks or save time and chance it ? Never had a rusty hook fail yet.

Posts: 2068 | A little rust probably not a big deal, entire hook is rusty... I’d replace for sure... I’m a big believer in control what you can, there are certainly enough variables we have no control of ..., sharpen hooks often, put better hooks on baits that have cheap hooks, leader gets a kink replace, new line every two years (flip yearly), etc....no reason to chance a rusty hook from my perspective!

Posts: 3508 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya, Surface rust.... Leave it, sharpen it up and go fishing. If the hook is showing structural integrity issues (this would take a long time), replace.. Steve

Posts: 1220 | You should be able to judge a little surface rust from corrosion that threatens a lost fish. You should also be filing it off as you sharpen the hook never casting anything but a shiny point. I would take note of the comment about Tetanus shots however. Watch for when a booster is needed really closely.
