Just got back home from fishing this evening (no luck but I did donate a ball cap to the depths). I saw a muskie (Tigers only in this lake) about 10 yards from the boat with it's head partly out of the water "mouthing" at the surface for several seconds. Then I saw part of its back and tail when it leisurely submerged. Does that sound "normal" ?  I'm new to this particular quarry and it's something I've never seen before.

Nothing new with this behavior. They do this to all new muskie fishermen! It's their way of saying, "Catch me! If you can"! LOL

Actually, you will find differing points of views on this. All I know, is when they do this, I never seem to be able to entice them into eating my offering.

Welcome to the sickness!

I hate it when they do that. Ask Nwild, I had one evening where Sue and I saw over a dozen nice fish, all doing that stuff. Couldn't get a one to even follow, and we spent 4 hours on them.

On hot sunny days when it is flat calm here on Lake St. Clair I can stand on the hard top and see dozens of muskies laying just under the surface. When I asked a local biologist about it his opinion was that the muskies were using the warmth of the sun to help digest thier food. Has anyone else heard this or any other explanations? All I know is gets pretty frustrating when you can see all of these fish and you can't make them eat!! The only tactic that has gotten a few fish is to troll a big bucktail right next to the boards as fast as you can.

I've seen that many times. Drives me crazy too. I had one do that about 15' from my boat that was at least mid 50"s if not close to 60". Biggest fish I ever saw in my life. I almost jumped out of the boat after her...

Other fish I've seen do that I've never caught. I've tried almost everything with no success.

Good fishin',

Captain Frank,

From the information I have gathered over the years, what you were told from the biologists is correct. Supposedly, the warmth of the sun and water temps rising around them speeds up their metabolism to help digest food. I have seem them do this many times in the waters I fish. Frustrating however, because I have learned over the years that when I see them doing this, I will leave the general area and move to another spot.

My theory here is that since muskies are somewhat territorial (especially the larger ones) the chance of getting one to hit in that locality is probably rather slim.

Just my two cents!

Never been able to get fish hanging out in the sun to go before either. But I did see a mid 30's fish "mouthing" at the surface for 5 minutes or so last year. At one point it was swimming with most of it's head out of the water for about 5 seconds or so. Pitched a bucktail at it and it took a good swipe just before reaching the boat. Mangled my grub trailer a little, but it must not have felt any hooks because it chased a figure 8 for a little while before it finally faded off.

I have been able to score several of these fish ripping a big bucktail super duper extra fast and hard.....i think it is more of a reaction "your pissing me off" hit but got 2 last year doing this.......other than that..at least you know there is one there!
