To me on the outside these look almost like the exact same bait. I think the big difference in the 2 is the reef is a wood bait where the jerko is not. Is this true? Do both give the same action as each other? Thanks.

There are a few differences. Yes there is a material difference. The Jerko sinks out of the box (very slowly) and the Reef Hawg floats. They have a different action, with the Reef Hawg gliding a wider glide (if you have a good one). I've found that with the Jerko, with a little practice you can get it to do exactly what you want it to do. If you want it to dive you can hit it a certain way, to walk the dog or whatever. I'd say the action is closer to that of an Undertaker then a Reef Hawg.

I haven't had too much experience with Hawgs, but I'll be trying them a little more this year. BTW, Barney the Purple Jerko was by far my best bait last fall. I recomend you try one, but give it time and work it slow. You'll catch fish, or I'll trade you for it.

2 completely different baits and the biggest factor is the Jerko is not as speed sensetive as the Hawg. And all reef-hawgs are not floaters either, some of my best ones sink like a stone! Handy

Another positive vote for the Jerko. You can make that thing do about anything you want. Slow light taps will give you a lazy wide glide. The more aggresive you get with it the more it will hop side to side and up and down. Being that they are made of plastic they are much more consistent than a Reefhawg.

I have not been a real big fan of the Reefhawg for just that reason, but after listening to so many success stories with the bait I have begun throwing them more recently. I hear the newer ones are a bit more consistent and have bought my first new ReefHawgs in many years this winter to give them another shot.

I like wooden jerkbaits best, no doubt about it. And I would prefer a 6" reef hawg over a 5.5" jerko but this bait is so easy to use and it's light. The action is not the same and therefore I have both in my box.

Reef Hogs ang Jerkos have very different actions. Being that i am in the plastics business for a living I know the jerkos and squirkos will be more consistent which is a plus for the Jerko. The jerko will do whatever you want it to with a little practice.

The Reef Hog has always been a light series of short jerks to get it to work, however i was fishing Ken Jackson and he showed me a much different way to work it by using 18 inch hard pulls and that bait came to life. I will definetly be using that technique on my reef hogs.

In conclusion they are both great baits that have there place to be used.

I use both quite a bit. I love my Reef hawgs, and always have for the reasons many don't, and that is their inconsisancies. I have a collection(some think I'm nuts) of Reef hawgs, with many duplicates(size color etc). I know what each of these lures do, and have applications for them all. Reef Hawgs are some of the most versital musky fishing lures I use, and I depend on them(almost too much) in the early summer phase, with the chewed up soldiers being my witness. They really hold up(50 plus muskies on a few of them and they are still go tos), though they do get chewed, and slightly water logged over time(they are wood), and I love it. Slow sinking Hawgs are my fav!!

That said, I love the Jerkos(just started using them last year). I love even more that they are in the 'tweener' sizes that Hawgs don't come in(5.5" and 7") , and that matters at times too! totally different action, and I can work my Jerkos with much longer violent pulls than my Hawgs. I love the fact that the Jerkos are plastic and withstand the beatings dished out. I have found that each of my Jerkos works a bit differently too.

I like the little reef Hawg any time of the year, working it with a near steady slow reel and double downward pops, the second longer than the first. It becomes a cadence, which I usually set to what I think conditions dictate. Basically, the lure tracks in the water like a chopper with a bad tail rotor, and the fish seem to eat the thing pretty well.

The Jerko is more of a 'sliding' glider for me, which I use all year also. I like to side to side, then hop up, then down, then repeat with the Jerko.

I have a favorite old Reef Hawg Mike got to me years ago that I would cry if lost.
