Location: Burton, Ohio | Zach I have used the real fish skin. The best skins are Yellow Perch and Walleye. Bluegill can be used but is a little tricky.
Just make sure you get all the flesh off the back of the skin. You need to be careful not to take the colored pigment off the skin that is in between the flesh and the scales. Let the skin dry out for a couple of days in the sun. You may want to pin it down to a board because it will curl up as it dries. After two or so days take a willowleaf spinner blade and lightly scrap off the remaining flesh. You will have some oil from the fish fat. Just take some rubbing alcohol and wash it down. This will make the skin pliable. This is when I will take the 5 minute epoxy and glue it down with rubber bands. Try to do both sides at the same time. One important thing is to remove the rubber bands right around the point before the epoxy gets super hard. If you don't it will pull off the scales later when you remove the bands. You can soften the seams with a sander. It will take a couple of coats on the lure before it will start to smooth out so you can paint your finer details. Can't wait to see them! Good luck!

| Fish are actually trading their skins in for one of John's paint jobs!!  By the way, love the decoys, awesome as usual.
