Posts: 23 | Can I idle my engine while running water through the flush connection on my motor while in my driveway? I've had differing answers even from Merc. Really i just want to make sure that it starts before I put in in the water in a few weeks. If not, anyone know where I can get decent flush attachments for a 150 Merc 4S?

Posts: 190 Location: Savage, MN | Unless there is something about Mercury that I am unfamiliar with I would just use a set of flushing muffs over the intake on the lower unit. I have them and use them on my Yamaha 4s all the time. In regards to the flush connection, I was told never to do that as it doesn't provide the cooling aspect required. Just my expierence but I know there are a lot more expierenced people on here. Here is a link to a set of flushing muffs. I have the same ones that I picked up at a local dealer for nearly the same price. http://www.amazon.com/Sea-Dog-Line-Motor-Flusher/dp/B000XBEOUI

Posts: 3508 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya, Definitely need the muffs. If you were to use the flush attachment on the motor, you would not be supplying water to the impeller located on the top portion of the lower unit. This would lead to a melt-down of the fins, leading to marbling (small chunks of rubber letting loose), then when you immerse the motor in water to run it, you shoot those little buggers up through your cooling system, potentially clogging it. Muffs are inexpensive. Walmart, Fleet Farm, Gander Mountain, Cabela's, Bass Pro....all will carry them. Steve
