Posts: 241 | I just purchase a Lowrance Elite-5 HDI (Broadband, Chartplotter, Downscan). My current boat came pre-rigged with a Lowrance x-65. The power for that unit comes from the starting battery in the back of the boat that also powers the starter, nav lights, bilge and livewell. Should I - or is it advisable to power my new locator from that same source. I have a trolling motor battery in the bow. Should I use that as a power source? My concern is about "noise" on locator or interference from the bow trolling motor. Any idea how much power these locators use? 'draft

Posts: 295 | Both my lowrance elite graphs are hard wired directly to my starting battery, put the fuse within 6 inches (as close as you can) of the battery post and you're set to go. I called lowrance service and they told me for the elite units to run 18 gauge wire and a 3amp fuse.

They don't use a ton of juice, and should get you through the day without a problem, and you aren't running a livewell all day.. Always charger your batteries after your get off the water at the end of the day. If you do have an issue, then upgrade to a dual purpose battery.

Posts: 68 | I will only use my trolling motor batters for the trolling motor. I run all my electronics to my starting battery, both standard boat electronics and my toys (2 fish finders, GPS tablet, 2 smart phones, LED running lights). I upgraded it to an Optima Blue and went with the biggest that would fit. I've heard great things about the Die Hard Marine batteries too. I always charge/trickle it when not using and have never had a failure or ran it dry.

Posts: 3508 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya, I would agree here with running off your starting battery. I also agree with Shep, that depending on how much you are running, a dual purpose battery might be a better fit than a starting battery. When my last starting battery was replaced, I went to a dual purpose as well, as I found on a week long trip in Canada, the charging system on the outboard was not enough to fully charge the battery. Went dual purpose and have not had any issues since. Electronics don't draw much power, but if you think about it, many out there are now running 2 - 3 pieces of electronics all day, along with a livewell, navigation, stereo, marine radio... it adds up.
