Subject: YET ANOTHER LOSS!!!

A sad day...a sad day INDEED!!! Television has lost yet another great--FRED ROGERS, known to millions worldwide as "Mr. ROGERS......
Fred started out his career as a tv puppeteer, then eventually got his own show, which ran for over 30 years. His quick wit and demeanor thrilled and charmed peeps of all ages from all over the world. MEOW CAT was my favorite, even though I secretly despised Fred and what he stood for; jealousy is a bitter pill to swallow when you are a young wild "donkey", and I guess his success was more than I could handle at the time! If only I could have met him in person and get to know the real Fred, perhaps I would have enjoyed his show more...now all I can do is mourn over the fact that he is gone.
Many "heros" from me youth are gone; Roy Rogers/Dale Evans, Burl Ives, Buffalo Bob, Lash Larue, Hoss, Hop Sing, Ben...Rin Tin Tin, Gentle Ben, Lassie, Car 54, Gumby/Pokie, Davey and Goliath...the list goes on and on...hopefully time will heal the pain of seeing some of our favorites pass on, and hopefully the networks will fill the air w/ re-runs!
*For the next month it will be sneakers and a sweater in his honor...

They still show re-runs here on Saturday mornings, and the dude had more followers around here than Elvis ever thought of having...ever see the comedian John Byner(?)? He used to do "Mr Ghandis Neighborhood", daggone hilarious! Perhaps Tomyv can tell us where the museum honoring Fred will be in P-Burg. Ever hear of Miss Jane and the Magic Mirror? It could have been a local show, I'm not sure...the name of the show was Romper Room, and Miss Jane battled a bunch of tykes during the alloted time...wish I had paid more attention! No doubt many of those little tyrants are not todays musky fishermen....

Romper Roam aired in Milwaukee when I was growing up, yes Sponge I remember but like you didn't pay a whole lot of attention.

What's sad to me is as we loose the greats like Mr.Rogers and others they seem to be replaced with the high energy cartoons filled with violence and little learning value. There seems to be no one stepping up to carry the torch for these more wholsome type shows...

My daughter is going to be 25 years old next month, not sure I like what t.v. is in store for her childeren when she has them. Good thing she's a school teacher and understands what is and isn't good content.

Seems the best feature our t.v. has these days is the "off" switch..

In MN we had Axel's Treehouse on Saturday mornings. Axel Torgerson was his name, but I can't remember the name of his dog and cat any more. It's amazing to compare that simple, innocent show to some shows the kids watch today.

Good point Mark; both TV and movies have quite an influence on peeps, I remember going to the Saturday matinees and watching westerns and then spending the rest of the day playing cowboys/indians. The eye is the window to the brain, and kids are very much influenced by what they see and begin to percieve and believe. Look back to what we saw as kids...many shows were in black and white, and the networks basically went off the air at 11:00 on weekdays; for years we had only 3 channels, and one of those was hard to get. Observe the ratings now on the shows that are considered "real life", ones that take a person or family and show them in their homes etc. Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous leave peeps dreaming of what "could have been", and Hollywood is as far from reality as it gets anymore. The commercials seek to touch every age group and lure them into thinking they have to look or be a certain way,; the stress from not being accepted for kids is at an all time high in this day and age. It is up to the parents to determine what their children to watch, and it is the parents who are responsible to teach their kids that having certain things or looking a certain way will not provide them the love and attention that are necessary for a stable upbringing. Yes things are different, very different...you can look back and see the "regression" of the media, tv, and Hollywood. All one can do is raise their kids as best they can, accept responsibility for their training, pray for their safety, and be careful about what influences them in everyday life...a daunting task for sure!

Couldn't have said it any better.....

I tell ya what really drives the point home to me... One of my best friends teaches the Scuba Diving program in the evenings at a local state university, UW-Stout. Depending on the size of his classes I often give him a hand with the pool sessions. When we get to the point of asking them to figure out their weight belts one of the formulas we use is ( 10% of your body weight plus 5 pounds)

You should see the blank stares and looks of confussion we get...these are college students for pete's sake and they can't do simple math in their head without the aid of a calculator. Yet with their eyes closed they can get through one of these violent shoot'em-up kill the other guy games that they play on Nintendo or Play Station.

I could go on and on...it's really sad.

May the spirit of Mr. Rogers and the good he stood for live on forever.
