Location: Stevens Point, WI | This is a question for all you motorheads out there. I have a 1999 Ranger which is just enough to pull my boat, the engine is rated for 5W-30 oil. Would I benefit in the warmer months using a heavier weight oil say 10W-30 to reduce friction loss at all??

I am a huge beleiver in Mobile-1 Synthetics. Yes it's more expensive but it's really worth it. Also recommend puting Mobile synthetic in your transmission and transfer case (if 4x4).
You will run cooler, get a little better mileage and it will substantially reduce the wear and tear on your driveline components.
I have run several vehicles including my last suburban to over 200k miles without every loosing a trany or motor. I also have the benefit of sending in oil samples in for analysis though my work and with Mobile-1 the wear is neglegable.
I run my engine oil same as with normal oils 3-4k on changes.
Examples..last week I travled 550 miles round trip for a speaking engagement and averaged 18.7 mpg. I currently drive a full size Chevy extended cab 4x4 with a vortec V8. My cruise on that trip was set in the 68-74 mph range.
Last time I checked I got 16mpg pulling my boat.

Location: NeverNever Lake | I use Mobil-1 in every engine I own. Boat motor and lower unit, motorcycle, lawnmower and I use Mobil-1 grease in bearings. I tried the 0-30 w when it 1st came out and it worked great in the extreme mountian top winters. Most of todays motors have closer tolerances than those of the past and they tend not to sling or blow-by the light stuff. There should be a chart in the owners manual that show different operating temps and oil weights. Remember, approx. 90% of total engine wear comes from a cold start-up. The faster you get it flowing the better. |

Location: On the Niagara River in Buffalo, NY | I use Amsoil Synthetic in everything from my Truck,Boat,Snowblower and Lawn mower.I do go to 10w40 grade during the warm summer months in my Chevy Silverado 1500 with 5.7 liter motor.Ever since I started running Amsoil Raceing 2-Stoke Synthetic through my Mercury 225 hp E.F.I. there has been no significate carbon buildup as I use to get from Merc Quick Silver Oil,less smoke and seems to have a little more power.I however will not use Synthetic lowerunit gear oil because it will not mix with water like moly based oils will. |
