hello,

I am trying to diagnose a problem with my tilt/trim. Occasionally, my motor will not go down, but always go up. I want to switch the leads and see if the problem reverses. This will tell me if it before or after (or at) the relays.

Attached is a picture of the side of the engine, I believe the 2 black boxes at the top with the wires sticking out of them are the two relays.

Does anyone know an easy way to do this?

thanks, Rob

I can try to help. I have a 96 Johnson 150. My trim/tilt relays are up on the Upper Port side of the motor, and are 2 side by side black 1"X 1" squares that plug in to an electrical housing. No wires to unplug, just the black boxes plug in. So simple to fix.

Go to Boats.net, and type in your model. You will be able to find a tilt electrical diagram, with part names and numbers. Their prices are very fair also.

Hope that helps, Good luck.

That motor does not have relays, it has a solenoid pack, I believe on yours it has the green and blue wire going to it on the right of your picture.

Does it do it on both switches - the one on the motor & one at the console/throttle lever? Assuming this is a console boat.

Yes, now I do remember. I replaced a solenoid pack once on a Johnson 93 50hp tiller on my first Lund.
I had lost spark....dead in the water. That sounds like it will work.

A great motor, almost bulletproof. But it didn't have power trim/tilt.
