Subject: Casting platform

After seeing some of the saltwater casting platform (most are probably two feet high that sit on top of the front deck) I was curious to see of anyone thought these had any benefit to use on a Muskie boat, mainly for the increased visibility into the water through the reduction of glare. Figure eights might get a little tougher, but would certainly be easier to see fish.

Thoughts?

I think he means casting platform, rather than "stool." You don't sit on them, you stand on them to get higher above the water.

My front Just Encase box is of a size I can pick it up onto the front deck and stand on it, which I sometimes do in calm seas. But if it's rocking at all, I stay on the deck.

I don't think they've caught on in muskie fishing because while there is some sight fishing with muskies, you never hear the term "put it on the plate" in muskie fishing like you do in salt. You're not casting a tiny crab or crab fly to a tailing redfish at 60' and need to see it. It' just not as much about visibility of the fish as it is for many of the saltwater species. Then like you said, the 8 would be tougher.

I'm not saying it doesn't have it's place with muskies, I just don't think you'll see a market for them any time soon. Just like towers on bay boats now...you'll not be seeing those on 620's any time soon because visually spotting a fish isn't as important as it is in salt.

Great reply Efly, you make some good points. In my mind, I wasn't thinking of the casting platform for sight fishing; maybe it's because my decks are so low to the water, but I feel like it's difficult for myself to see some follows until they are right next to the both. I know that they come in low sometimes, but I was curious if the extra elevation would be beneficial in my situation.

My casting platform front/and back are rather high (particularly the back), I'm looking forward to my next boat being closer to the water. Until then, longer rods will have to suffice for figure 8's...

Also, I'm not sure you'd want to be that high up during an 8. I think the fish would see you more easily, and then if you had to jump down they'd see that too. I'd rather see the fish later than to see them 40' out but scare them away.

I've alway felt that the closer to the water you where the better off you where. Less likely for the fish to see you when following, much easier to do figure-eights without a lots of body movement, and easier to let the fish go if you actually catch one.

We're not sight fishing for the most part. Very differt than tring to get a redfish or bonefish to bite.
