I have lots of follows on the softails but no takers, just wondering what to do when a fish gets up to the boat and you have a follow? Should I just twitch it in place or figure eight? Or just change lures real fast and throw a double 10? I mean they seem more interested in the phantom, but i just cant get them to commit. Any help would be great.

IMO here is the best thing you can do....As soon as you see the fish speed up the retrieve, less side to side much quicker "taps", fish often react if they think the bait is going to get away....as you get 10 feet from the boat forget about trying to "make it dance" just reel in like a bucktail (the bait will still "sway" a little side to side and obviously the tail is still moving), the faster you can move the bait and keep the fishes interest the more likely she will eat... L turn into a smooth 8, get her to eat high outside - I do the same thing with WTD topwaters, bringing them under water...works for me.

Justin's advice is pretty good...That's about all you can do. I generally don't like seeing follows on my Phantoms, it tells me fish are there ( which is good) but I'm looking for reaction strikes more then anything. In my experiences any combination of shallower/darker water is more phantom friendly then deeper or clearer lakes. The thicker the cover the better....( weeds, reeds, and trees)

two words: death pause.
if you aren't incorporating a death pause about 10 feet out you are missing out on some hits..i work them fast and give them a death pause about where I can see the bait...10 or so feet out... lots of fish come out of nowhere to hit it and some of the following fish will hit it there too.

I agree with Brad... but would add more than just one "death pause" during each retrieve.  Go crazy (erratic) for 10 feet... the give her some extra long hang-time... then go crazy for 10 feet.... pause... until you run out of string.

If you continue to get follows.... try a different lure style (burn blades, rip a suick, topwater, etc.).

true jason but I usually do much shorter (time wise) pauses throughout the retrieve...as the lure does sink ya know...the one I do at the boat that I can see the lure is much longer ....fish come out of nowhere to chow it...

I agree with Brad whole heartedly. I would add trying that same tactic one or two taps outside the weed edge or drop off. Works with hellhounds too.
