Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Fall Fishing and Bucktails

Has anyone had success using bucktails or spinnerbiats in the fall?

I normally pull out my arsenal of cranks and jerks as we all do, but I can't remember using bucktails last fall?

as a general rule I keep hearing/reading that bucktails are no good in the early to late fall. Crankbaits, jerkbaits and suckers are best. But fishing remains fishing, and muskies being so picky, so if you can fish it slow enough and deep enough, they might score. From what I have read and seen for instance the in-fisherman tapes and Jim Saric tapes, is that they are no good for the fall. I don't know why.

I have had success in the fall using bucktails, I just wish I could get over my own mental block that crankbaits and jerkbaits are all that works.

For fall bucktail fishing I like the bigger tails like the Bucher 900 series or the Eagle tail. You may have to fish them with a weighted leader or add some weight to them to get them down to the desired depth.

Bucktails work in the fall, just fish them on the same spots that have worked in the fall for you in the past and work them deeper and slower than you would over a weedbed. God bless.

I have had moderate success in the Fall with Bucktails, also large slow rolled spinnerbaits. But my overall # 1 performer by far of course is the Jig. Remember deep and slow most of the time.

Wow! I guess fishing is fishing and try anything and everything.
I have some of the weighted lures that I will use and give it a shot!

Thanks

I am a bucktail fan,I use them all season. The latest I have caught a musky on one is October 31,yup a Halloween musky.I am sure I could have gotten one in November but I lost the lucky bucktail a few casts after I caught the fish.I now have a few spares, just in case that pattern ever devlops again.I was river fishing and slow rolling,(if you want to call it that),just above the bottom. The hits were subtle and you had to pay attention, but the fish seemed to like the presentation.Good Luck,Paul

I love hair in the fall. I have even caught fish on hair in 39 degree water temps in November.

Jerkbaits are fun and often productive, but dont forget to use hair. Muskies have been eating them for generations.[;)] []
