I recently bought a Humminbird 858C for the stearn of my boat. Overall the unit works great but it will not read the depth in shallow water correctly. It will often read 0.8' (or 0.6', 0.7' etc.) when I am actually in 3'-4'. Anybody have a solution?

I will check on it for you.

Have you tried switching to "clear mode" when in shallow water?

Here are my base settings...I adjust to match the conditions during the day.

SI Sensitivity: 8 to 12 (Lower for hard bottoms, higher for soft bottoms)
SI Enhance Settings: Off for Crisp Images - Low or Med to make it easier to see fish
---Sensitivity: This is the same sensitivity as above
---Contrast: I leave it at 10 most of the time
Scroll Speed: Make boat speed or a little slower 2-3 when idling for me
SI Transducer Frequency: 455kHz for largest coverage area (90% of time) 800 kHz when looking for more detail (10% of the time)

DI Sensitivity: 10-12 this is seperate of SI or 2D Sensitivity
DI Coverage: Wide for more data or Narrow when only looking under boat

2D Sonar Frequency:
Switchfire Mode: Max for Vertical Fishing and Water over 10', Clear Mode when I want to see fish only
Sensitivity: Varies per conditions and which Mode I'm using

go to Humminbird.com
under the Support tab, go to Product Registration and register your unit
once you've done so, the My Account area will list any software updates

get the latest update, it should be from June sometime...there was a slight problem reading depth and loss of detail in extremely shallow water with an older software version...it's corrected and works great in the new versions.

one other thing: before updating your software, be sure to return your unit to the default settings.

I'm guessing there is an easy way to return the unit to its default settings? Probably some sort of reset under one of the menus?

Yeah Nate, I think it's listed under the "Tools" tab. I also read that after this update, any future updates will include the default restore as part of the update file. One other tip is to turn the unit on before inserting your SD card with the upgrade.

:)

Do this. Do not insert the card then turn the unit on.
