Location: nappanee IN | prolly my own fault but i wired up my cuda 168 to my running lights instead of trying to snake a wire all the way under my floor to the back of the boat where my starter battery is located. now i'm showing fish that my eagle- fish easy- on the console says aren't there, is this what i get for being lazy?could i just get a little lawn mower 12 volt battery and use that for my bow mount depthfinder? thanks again..karol |

Location: Green Bay, WI | I don't understand what the voltage source has to do with what is showing on your display? The fish finders operate on a range of voltage, so as long as you verify that the supply voltage to your front locator is within that specified by the manufacturer, then I don't think that's the problem. Are you saying that your running lights are on the trolling motor circuit, or just that you tapped into that line from the start battery, instead of running a separate line?
If the voltage is correct, then the first thing I would ask is if the front locator is better than the one on your console (that doesn't see these fish)? Maybe the fish *are* in fact there, and the console locator simply doesn't interpret them as fish...
I'd check the voltage in that battery (or at the point where you are tapping off the light circuit) when you're running your trolling motor (or lights). If it's within the range specified by the manufacturer as acceptable, then it shouldn't be a voltage issue.

| Those low end units always "show fish"...I wouldn't even use it to "look for fish" but just use it as a depth finder. |

EDIT: Ah, here it is... http://www.eaglesonar.com/Products/Sonar/Cuda168.htm But looking at the Fish Easy unit, it doesn't look like there's all that much difference (besides color) between the two units. So although it could be ghosting fish, maybe there is something wrong with the console unit? Have you any sort of other indication whether or not the fish are really there?

Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | I'd be more inclined to believe the unit showing me something and doubt the unit not displaying fish. Check the noise filtering on the dash unit. If you had reading problems with it while running the filtering may have been turned up or the sensitivity turned down. Either way would explain why you are not seeing things with that unit. Unfortunately, other than a complete change of transducer locations, quite a few boats I've been in had to have more of the noise suppression on to get a reading at higher speeds that you can make use of. Just one possible answer. |
