| I went smallie fishing last weekend with a friend chasing musky. I ended up catching a 38" musky on a bass spinnerbait. This was the first day that I had ever seen a musky in the wild. The river is less than an hour from my house, so I'm convinced I'd like to spend some time hunting this awesome fish.
I've gone to Dick's and ended up with a Rapala Super shad rap in chrome, an f18 floater in silver, a jointed floater in firetiger, and a creek chub pikie. I may not be exact on those descriptions but you have the idea of what I got. That's the biggest stuff they had.
Other than a rod and reel, could you all recommend the minimum basic tackle for my new obsession? I'm starting a new job next week and money is very tight, $45 lures are out of the question.
What is the bare minimum lures necessary? In each lure, what would be the color that would serve me best, most often?
Would I be better off just fishing the spinnerbaits I use for largemouth and save my money till I can get it all?

| where you fishin? I fish rivers primarily too. Harder to run conventional lures because of depth. Try rollie and helens muskie shop and look at the bulldawg baits. musky love em and they come in lots of sizes. If you are fishin 10 feet or less make sure you get the shallow version. do not always think that muskie willl only hit larger baits................caught my first one on a bass spinnerbait too.

| I live in Tennessee and was suprised at the size and numbers of these fish in the same waters I wade for smallmouth. Makes you rethink your strategies, Huh.  |

| Darksider, he is right, it ain't cheap. Takes alot of time to figure them out, like forever. Nothin like it though. I used to fish bass tournaments, that is ok and all, but I would be ok if I never fished another. Wait until you are fishing one of those giant topwaters and you catch a 6 or 7lb smallie. I have caught more smallmouth over 6lbs. since I started muskie fishing all the time than I did in the past ten or so years.By the way, I like the curado 300, they are low profile reels and that is much easier on your hands and arms especially if you will primarily be doing alot of casting. I think they just released a new model though, pretty sure they will run you around 250.00. You may shop BPS or cabelas and see if they still have the others, they were on sale for much less. I know what you mean when you say it is hard to beleive those fish are in the same water you wade and now that you have become interested, you will probably see alot more fish. Fishing rivers myself, in VA and WVA, i notice some days you will see several fish and some it's like they don't exist.....good luck.

| Baby Shallow Raiders work very well in river conditions, also 6" Jakes. Maybe a Zara Spook for topwater because they catch bass, pike and 'skies. Try either Burts or Suicks for jerk baits. Pretty much any bucktail will do. All these baits are rather inexpensive, and come in a multitude of colors. As for colors, local fish populations should give you a key as to the natural choices. Darker water go with brighter colors. You can't forget a sucker under a bobber this time of year though. |
