Posts: 780 | Deep diving craikbaits. It seems not to many anglers use them as much anymore. When I've been watching the fishing shows, I can't recall an episode that covered deep crank'in. Also what was interesting is when Jim Saric was trolling or casting open water,a shallow running bait was used. I also have drifted away from deep runners choosing instead to throw bulldawgs, gliders, and even surface baits where years ago I would have chosen a deep runner. The new picture on the home page has "big muskies moving on soft plastics over open water". Would anybody still opt to throw a deep diver? So what gives? Opinions? Kdawg

Posts: 1764 Location: Ogden, Ut | I still have pretty good success w/ Slammers. I can't seem to keep the paint on them now though...which, unfortunately, doesn't seem to be that unusual for me ![]() The DDD has taken over quite a bit of the time that traditional deep diving cranks used to have. Depth Raiders have been pretty good too, but they melt out here in the summer and get out of shape. S. Edited by sorenson 7/11/2007 8:26 AM

Posts: 1906 Location: Oconto Falls, WI | There is no doubt that plastics have become very popular especially for those just getting into fishing deeper water. For good reason as they work, and are almost idiot-proof. However, Cranks are still a huge part of my arsenal, and often times get the nod before rubber. One thing I have noticed especially in tournaments is that rubber will be hot early, but after a day or two of constant pounding the rubber bite shuts down. This can be a time when the cranks will shine, and not many take advantage of it as they haven’t learned how to fish them. A lot of proclaimed suspended fisherman now days only use rubber, and if the rubber bite isn’t happening they aren’t being successful. Learn to fish cranks and you can become a lot more consistent in your suspended fishing. The standby’s of Jakes, Ernies, D-Raiders, Ciscokids, Bagley’s, Triple D’s, Reef Diggers, etc… are all great, but those that can achieve even deeper depths have there place that even fewer people use compared to just the standard cranks. Some of my favorites are Ciscokids with an extra large lip, countdown cranks like Sharks and D-Raiders, and custom weighted cranks like Reef Diggers can get you deeper than the typical 10’ max diving depth of the standard cranks. There are many times that you need to get down 15-20’ with a crank, and the cranks will get hit more times than the rubber in some cases. Limiting yourself to rubber for deep water fishing is limiting your chances at catching fish. Plain and simple! Keep sticking to rubber, and those of us that like cranks will clean up after you!

Posts: 97 | Phil Drury from American Hardwood lures makes a tremendous deep diving crank bait out of Ironwood. I use the jointed ironwood version and it can reach good depths with great action. www.musky-lures.com Edited by brule 7/11/2007 9:39 AM Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Posts: 780 | I know this bait is old school, but my favorite deep diver has always been Hi-fin's Giant Scamper which about 5 years ago or so, has disappeared from the catalogs. Does anybody know if Hi-fin still makes them? Especially in midnight black! Kdawg
