I normally don't spend alot of time in this forum, but i was talking to the wife yesterday and she said she can help me paint up some baits. I know nothing about paint, clear coat, can you buy blanks? What type of bait is the easiest to begin with; glider, topwater, crankbait, etc? Are there any other topics in the forums for newbies? I figure this might a good way to get the wife excited about fishing. She's very artistic. Thanks for any help

If you do some browsing in this forum you will get the answers to most of your questions or run a search on "blanks" or something. You will also see references to a couple other sites focused on lure building that should be helpful to a beginner. As to what type of baits are easiest to start out with, that really depends on your wood working skills and tool access if you are making them yourself. If you are just looking for blanks, to be cost effective I thiink you need to buy in large quantities, but I have seen some smaller quantities for sale on eBay, too. Welcome to phase II of the Muskie sickness!

lol, i'd like to start working on a couple blanks first. Just so i don't put all the time and effort into making a blank and just screw the whole thing with a crappy paint job. What do you think it would cost to get a good start?

Since you are in Madison, have you considered going to the CCMI musky school? They have classes on bait making, painting/clear coating etc. Otherwise I learned a lot from tackleunderground.com and the precanned bait plans/diagrams at lurebuilding.nl

A lot of stuff on eBay. I think a few guys here make some of these too. Good blanks most of the time.

This guy makes good stuff:

I think Kingfisher makes some too.
