| With most musky fisherman using superlines of various brands its interesting to read about the increase in equipment failures,broken rods,line guides loose or falling apart,reels only lasting a season or two.I wonder if the no stretch characteristics of these lines is a contributing factor,putting added stress on equipment. I still use good old 36lb. musky master black dacron for jerkbaits,and low stretch musky mono for everything else. I use st. croix premier rods with abu 7000 reels with no equipment problems. Any other thoughts on the subject? |

| I think that the advantages of super line out wiegh the occasional failure it causes on other equipement. The biggest advantage I see is the smaller diameter. With 36lb. dacron I can cast all the way to the arbor knot on a 6500 which means the retrieval is very slow at the beginningof the retrieve. |

| One other thing that may be causing equipement failure is the use of larger baits nowdays. |

| I'm certain that reels were NOT designed with the sort of hell we put them through in mind. Casting a 7 oz bulldawg with braided line that doesn't stretch, drag locked all the way down, 7'-0" XH rod that doesn't bend much...
When everything in the chain is designed with very little give and you put it under an enormous amount of strain, something's gonna break. Maybe a split ring, or a snap, straightened hooks, snapped line, blown out reel, shattered rod...

| Reelman,hopefully that occassional equipment failure does not occur when you got a fifty on the end of your line. Considering how hard it is catching a fifty incher and the price of good equipment these days, I do not want any failures. |

| kdawg, I guess I could say that I hope the 50" doesn't hit at the beginning of the cast when you have no line on your spool with 36lb. dacron and are trying to reel like a banshey trying to get the line tight! All choices have good and bad things that can happen. |

| Reelman,as far as large line diameter goes,for many years now I've gone to abu 7000 reels in both the 5.3 to 1 ratio and 4.1 ratios. Built like tanks with quick line retrieves. I know they are big and heavy,but like you said,the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. kdawg |
