Posts: 89 Location: Breezy Point, MN | Hi everyone, I got the neat opportunity to fish the Cave yesterday with my good friend and co-worker, Rick May. He is a blast to fish with, and we laughed all day on the water! We got on the lake around 10:00am after a hearty breakfast in Salt Lick, and fished a number of spots with no success. It was a beautiful January day, with highs in the mid-fifties. Water temps were in the low 40's. However, around 1:00pm the clouds moved in and the musky action immediately picked up. A special thanks goes to a real nice guy named Eugene, who helped us out with Rick's trolling motor battery. My boat was not available for the trip due to a warranty issue with Ranger on my winch. We took Rick's Alumacraft down and it fished great, except for a few trolling motor issues. Eugene helped us out at Scott's Creek Marina and also with a few great fishing tips. Once we got the motor issue figured out, we were back on the water by 2:30pm. We proceeded to go up Scott's Creek and I caught two muskies within ten minutes on a Super Stalker crankbait. Both fish were shorties (21-23"ers) so there are no pics. I raised two more small ones in Scott's. We then left to fish some main lake spots, and Rick had a 42-43" bruiser come up on his weighted Suick off of a main lake point. It was an easy twenty pounder, but it wouldn't hit him on the Figure 8 manuever. I hooked and lost a 31-32"er once again on the Super Stalker off a main lake point with weeds near the Flats. What a fun January day! We ended up with two muskies boated, one lost, and seven follows, including the one really nice one. While we didn't catch any big ones, we were musky fishing in January! For this Ol' Wisconsin Boy, that was a treat in itself! Thanks again Rick for bringing your boat and being a great musky partner on the water! Looking forward to this coming year. | ||
