Location: So. Illinois | I've been trying to give my kid brother Jim some advice on what to buy for his first Muskie rod and reel. A couple of weeks ago, I told him about the Phantom Lure web-site give away. Wouldn't you know it, he entered and won. Now he is in the market for a rod and reel setup so he can try this painfully addictive sport. He doesn't live too far form Thorne brothers so I told him to stop buy and talk with the pro's. I did some checking on their web site and see they have a combo on sale. They are selling a Shimano Compre Rod and Catala 400 reel for $160.00 bucks. Seems like a good setup to me for the price. I own a Compre rod and like it but I have no experiance with the Catala. Looks like it has 4 BBs and a thumb-bar. Looks like a good setup. I was going to suggest he buy a St. Crouix Premier Rod and an Abu Gacia 6500 C3. This combo would run about $200.00. Cost is a factor as money is tight (he's got a baby on the way.....congrats Jimbo). I'd appreciate feedback to see if I am an track with my recommendations before I send him up to Thorne Bros to spend his hard earned money....

Location: St. Louis, MO., Marco Is., FL, Nestor Falls, ON | The 7' Shimano Compre rod with a Pflueger 66 reel would be a nice combo that will do just about everything he would want. I would think he could come in at around $160 if looks hard. I have several of these combo's and they work just fine. |

| The Premier rod in 7ft. 6in. would be my choice. I would spend twenty bucks more and get the 6600C5. I have C4's and C5's and there is a lot of difference. Musky fishing is hard on reels and trying to save money will only cost more down the road. Put some good 80# superline on, and for about a duece and a half you have a good outfit. Later |

Location: Yahara River Chain | My only suggestion is getting him a baitcaster with the crank on the same side as his spinning reels. I will gaurantee that he will love it!!!!!!! |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I have a Shimano, it's a very nice rod. The reel can be any of a half dozen brands, it's confusing to say the least. I have two Okuma reels, use them hard, and like them. I have two Ambassadeurs, like them alot too. I have a couple Pfleugers, to. Very nice reels. I have a few Daiwa's, two Shimanos, and a couple older Ryobi models. Have him pick a reel that feels good and is in the price range he likes, and maintain it well, and he will find any of the well known reels out there will serve the need. |

Location: oswego, il | If the shimano rod is comparable to the st croix MH rod 3/4to3oz, then i would say it's a good all around rod to be used for everything except the big stuff. |

Location: So. Illinois | Thanks all for the comments. I have been at this for a couple of years but am not up to speed on the latest and greatest gear out there. I think you hit the nail on the head Mr. Worral, it comes down to personal preference -- finding something that feels comfortable for the individual to use along with a little TLC. I will pass on the list of recommendations you all provided and pass them on to Jim. I am sure he will find something to his liking.....
